Hi, I have a BMW e36 318i, I have noticed that the lights on the instrument cluster lights are not working and the lights on the A/C panel as well. The lights are working where the headlight switch is.

I have changed the fuses and done testing to see if there is power getting through, but no power is getting through.

Need help please.

Cheers.

Or someone accidentally just turned it all the way down when cleaning that dash board area. It's pretty easy to do as I've done it myself before.........

Hi Guys, i have replaced all the fuses, 22, 26 and 37. I have even brought a secondhand light dimmer. I have also checked the instrument cluster where the dash light bulbs go and there is no power getting to the circuit board. I am getting power where the dimmer switch goes.

I have got a clue where to go from here.

Cheers

I would check all fuses even seemingly unrelated ones with a multimeter,
are you sure the dimmer works correctly, 12v in and variable voltages out?
do you have 12v on and off to the dimmer when you turn the headligt switch
on and off?

OK, you have 12V into the dimmer unit but nothing coming out.

I would not be surprised if you have a short to the ground/chassis somewhere in the dimmed illumination wiring. It is thin and goes all over, and is not hard to accidentally pierce or pinch through. People sometimes do that installing an aftermarket radio or a lighted shift knob.

Did the dimmed instrument/switch lighting use to work? Did you work on something recently that might have disturbed the car's wiring?

If you have a short, the dimmer will switch on again, once you remove the short.
