M550i Drivetrain and Check Engine light. Bad Wastegate Solenoid?

Hello! I was curious if anyone has ever experienced the problem I am having with my 2018 M550i. For the past week or so I have randomly been getting a drivetrain malfunction light and whenever it would come on the car idle would sound different and acceleration was very light. Then the light would go away and randomly come back on a couple days later. Today it came back on and threw a check engine light. I scanned for codes and got these two codes P2ABA and P12C6. I did some research and it’s showing it would be this waste gate sensor! Should I buy this and replace it? I’ve already order new NGK Plugs and Dinan Coils the replace everything when they come in! If anyone else has had this problem let me know! Thanks!

Since it sounds like you're doing the work yourself, before just blindly throwing parts at it - open up your Integrated Supply Module and pull all of your connectors, checking for corrosion and/or coolant.

I had similar symptoms about 6 months ago, though it was one of my O2 sensors throwing the code. Turns out, my thermostat had started leaking, coolant had traveled up the wiring harness from the thermostat, and shorted out the connector in the Integrated Supply Module. Before I could get the car into the dealership for diagnosis, I got a Drivetrain Malfunction Error that prevented the car from even starting. They ended up replacing the thermostat, wiring harness, Integrated Supply Module, and the Bank 1 DME.

According to the Service Advisor (who, honestly, I don't actually trust at this point...for other reasons), this is a known possible issue.

I only suggest this as it's free to pop it open and check your connectors for coolant or other corrosion before throwing money at parts that probably aren't bad.

Greetings! 2019 M550I xdrive with ~28k miles. 2 weeks ago I started getting random P12C4, P12C6, and P2ABA codes with the same drive train malfunction warning. Issue would resolve after sitting overnight or at work. Started to pay attention as the warning usually followed instances of heavy acceleration (Can't be helped..lol) or if I would make multiple stops on way home after work and would get the code at startup. Hard to believe a turbo is failing at 28k but never know.

I use an OBDLINK CX
I the issue continues to repeat, I'll take it for repair.

If you have a 2018, (may apply to 2019) there are a number of extended warranties covering the intercoolers, coolant thermostat and radiator shutters (15 yrs, 150,000 miles). It may be worth a BMW dealer diagnosis, as it might be covered.

BTW, I heard an independent shop cured a drivetrain malfunction and turbo issue. It was due to low coolant in the intercooler coolant reservoir. Apparently there is no sensor for this reservoir (there is for the radiator). So whenever the car got hot, the intercoolers were not doing their job, so boost went very low, and warnings popped up. Easy fix once they figured out what was wrong.

My 2018 M550 just threw up the same error at 55k. Technician sail all 4 rubber coolant hoses are also leaking and thermostat is bad. Does anyone have a DIY for this or a reasonable mechanic in the DMV area. BMW just quoted $7k to replace the bank 2 waste gate actuator, updated to braided hoses, replace thermostat. Other shop I trust said they have never replaced a similar actuator and don’t have the tools to recalibrate after replacement. I appreciate any advice or guidance.

Thermostat is covered under an extended BMW warranty due to many failures. Thermostat, intercoolers and radiator shutters are all warranted 15yrs or 150k miles. Talk to your BMW service advisor. There was also an update on coolant hoses...mine were upgrade to the stainless steel braided ones at no charge will under the factory warranty. I was under the impression it was a recall item. But could be mistaken. Again, good to talk with a BMW dealer service advisor, or even BMWNA customer service.

I have attached the extended warranty for the active grill/shutters. There is similar ones for the 2018 M550iX for the thermostat and intercoolers. Your BMW dealer should be aware of these, but many times they don't inform customers, as warranty reimbursement is not great, and they rather get the full payment from the customer, rather than the discounted payment from BMWNA.

Talking about things failing, and not wishing to start a new thread, about a month ago, I started hearing a high pitched barely audible whine on my 2020 M550 with the sound being more noticeable during acceleration. I thought it might have been a fuel pump as I already replaced one under warranty. Nope, it turned out to be the front differential, a small repair that would have cost about $6,700 had the car not been under warranty (41K miles).

FWIW, no codes. although that does not surprise me.

My guess is that the electromechanical part fails prematurely because it's in a very harsh environment with extreme heat.

Anyway, I, too, just had this on my car. At least this was a "relatively" cheap repair. Came out to $1350 at the dealer. I think the cheapest repair I've had in the past year.

I just want to provide an update on the three issue I had and new problems. The thermostat was covered under warranty and after calling BMWNA, they reach out to the local shop and the service manager provided a 50% discount on the repairs, from $5200 to $2600 for the upgraded turbo lines and bank 2 actuator. Basically upgrading the turbo lines under warranty. They quoted $3200 for the lines.

About 24 hours after I got the car back, it had a rough idle and the check engine light came on. The bluedriver tool showed a pending trouble code P136A ‘A’ camshaft stuck (bank 2), and P0456 EVAP system leak detected (very small leak). The next morning the check engine light was gone but the obd tool still showed the P136A code.

A few days later I received a voicemail that my car is ready and service advisor told me they did some reprogramming and drove 20 miles.

Today another rough idle when slowing down and the car just doesn’t feel like it has the same power when I go full throttle in sports+. I thought maybe they forgot to put my Dinan ECU back on but when I checked the codes again I got a different pending trouble bank 2 code P0022 Timing over retarded bank 2.

The technician’s note says “VANOS fault stored, tech followed test plan and found the occurrence happened one time, the test plan concludes to clear fault and test drive. tech test drove 10 miles. No repairs recommended.”

I want to take the car back again for a second time but I just want a sanity check form others. My instinct is they messed up something during the bank 2 actuator repairs and don’t want to go back in but just a guess. The advisor seems to be implying this is something that will go away but I don’t know how.

i appreciate all thoughts and advice.

You're going to need more than P-codes to be able to diagnose properly, but since they did mention the car was reprogrammed, maybe the different software could affect the tune?

Update:
My 2018 m550 is getting the Wastegate Solenoid replaced. It's been at the shop for a while delayed by 3rd party warranty inspection/approval. Finally approved and they said it would be done today. Then I get this text— concerned the issue is not a miss-estimation of hours needed and a deeper problem they caused. Any guidance on the situation? Seems wild that they would lowball the hours like that... is 19h for a watergate standard?

Not even close...is he new and getting FRUs mixed up with hours? Book time is 18 FRUs is about right, which would be 1.8 hours.

See my post on the first page for a video showing how to replace it.
