Don't want to talk all that best link, search button mobo jumbo

want to talk what happens when the battery is removed from a 01 540...

I already know the answer, The car gets retarded ... Forgets who and what it is... and doesn't start of run right after you hook the new battery up..

But that's still not good enough for me..

I heard something about a Bwm memory saver (id imagine thats something the dealer use's) Luckily for me Ive not had the misfortion of working in a bmw shop yet (and hopefully never)

If its anything like audi and Vw... The car forgets its Throttle limits (those becoming unresponsive)

I had thought maybe i could keep a battery tender on the terminals while the batter is swapped out.. but was also told that wont work...

granted this is a hypothetical thread.... IM not in any trouble... I just need to know now b4 i need to know then

There are several prevailing schools of thought re: letting the car "go to sleep" before disconnecting the battery. I never concerned myself with it, never suffered any ill effects....YMMV.

In keeping with the hypothetical nature of this thread, in the ... um ... er ... well, let's just say I found this link 'somewhere' ... which discusses how 'best' to disconnect the battery to prevent something called the 'BMW transport mode' from kicking in:

- How to disconnect the battery to prevent the 16-minute BMW transport mode from disabling the remote key and other items (1)

Burning2nd, if you wait the 16 min the only thing that will happen is your clock will have to be reset and I think the trip odometer will reset back to 0.
Even if you don't wait 16 min you will probably be OK.
You can connect a battery tender under the hood when you disconnect the battery but you should make sure all of the interior lights are off so the current draw on the Tender isn't more than it can supply. If you use a Tender make sure the positive battery cable doesn't touch ground, as it will have 12 volts (fron the Tendor) on it.

Wow that's a rambling question. But since you're a fellow E39/E36 owner, will share my experiences.

I transferred the battery disconnect I had on my 530 to my M5. The way these cars drain batteries, I need the peace of mind. As you probably know already, you can gain a few more days by not engaging security system and locking the car manually.

The only "memory loss" thing I know of is for the E36, it's a 9 volt you plug into the cig lighter to prevent losing the radio codes. That doesn't happen in the E39, usually I only lose date and time.

However, recently when the car was disconnected for over a week, I also lost radio presets. No ill effects noticed so far. The only variable besides the length of time? I waited for the car to go to sleep, instead of doing it right away.

I don't understand why following the instructions in your owners manual is an issue if you don't have onBoard Nav?

And I haven't been sold yet on this mysterious "transport mode" issue. More than likely...who ever started this rumor is actually referring to the "ASSEMBLY LINE" mode. But once the control module is coded with the car's ZCS coding...that mode is cancelled.

The "transport mode" is used on bimmers that have self leveling systems...so again...I'm skeptical about this rumor that disconnecting the battery causes the car to revert. (see info below)

Me neither ... but what do I know.

The 'only' thing I know is that I have a problematic DICE Silverline, so, I must have disconnected my battery a hundred times.

And, I never once waited 16 minutes.

Anyway, since Saint Q's information was so, ummm, uh, er ... so Saintly ... I just added it to that other link for cross reference.

Here is the disconnect procedure recommended by Tom for the DICE Silverline in the BMW:
Note 1: A full battery reset procedure is as follows:
1. Disconnect the iPod from the DICE interface cable
2. Remove the negative battery cable with a 10mm socket wrench
3. Remove the positive battery cable with a 10mm socket wrench
4. Touch battery cable terminals together (away from battery) for about 5 seconds (a small spark is normal as this is stored power draining from the system); on the E39, short with your wrench because the cables do not reach each other otherwise.
5. Allow cables to remain disconnected for about 5-7 minutes
6. Reconnect the positive battery cable
7. Reconnect the negative battery cable
8. Reboot most iPods by pressing on MENU & CENTER buttons for about 5 seconds and then reconnecting to the DICE cable after the reboot process is completed. Reboot of iPod touch & iPhone, which don't have buttons, is a different procedure (please advise so we can write that here for others).

You are referring to the dual pot that connects to the gas pedal and the pot inside the throttle body (tu drive by wire) that the DME uses for comparision?

Yes you deffinately have to put garlic on the battery to aboid any ill effects. Also I hear from my friends in Louisianna that sprinkling brick dust around the edges of the battery will prevent ill effects.
