My mechanic (family friend) says he needs me to find him new u joints. I have determined that the driveshaft from the trans to the differential has a u joint that can only be replaced by swapping out the whole shaft.

I just wanna know that I am looking to buy the right think. There are not u joints in the spindles from the diff. to the hubs right? I'm having trouble finding a refurbed driveshft that is an acceptable price

Umm, not to piss on anyone's parade but didn't you have another thread basically with this information?

Infact Hornhospital told you that these bearings aren't Rebuild able DIY, That you would need to buy a new one or take it to a shop. Then you posted this?.....

No the other thread was to investigate the problem, this thread was to ask a question about u joints. My mechanic told me I needed a new U joint and I was not sure if that meant u joint in the driveshaft or u joint in the spindle to the back hub. I don't know if there are u joints in the spindles or if they are V shafts because I have never gotten into that part. I can't just go out and look at my car right now because it is locked inside my mechanic's fence while he is on vacation. Basically I did not want to buy the wrong part .

You can't buy any u-joint for an e36 driveshaft, so the point is moot. They are only available and usable by driveshaft shops, since it takes professional equipment to disassemble and replace the u-joints. It is NOT a DIY project. You either buy a new shaft (mega-bux), buy a rebuilt shaft, usually on an exchange basis (semi-expensive), or buy a junkyard shaft with an unknown history for cheap.

I understand the situation with the driveshaft, I just want to make sure that is the only place there is a u joint. I don't think ppl understand my question. I just want to make sure there is only one u joint in the car (thats why I thought it was a simple and stupid question). A friend told me I could have u joints in other places besides the driveshaft. My mechanic is out of town so I can't ask him.

And I was looking at that one driveshaft I mentioned above because it was only 150 bucks and it had a warranty for a year.
