Okay, while back I used to install and do custom audio systems in cars. I have been out of the loop for a while so I'm asking my new friends on here a recommendation for my new whip :dunno:

From what I hear Kenwood has gone to crap and so has Clarion :dunno:

So I figured while I have extra $$$ what should I get for a good CD Player?? Was even considering getting a flip screen?? Tell me what you like or hate? Thanks :D

^This is true.

I gotta say, though the sound quality isn't so hot, the layout, design, and user friendliness of most of the Kenwood line can't be beat. The one I had in my E36 was pretty much exactly how I would have designed a head unit.

I just got a Pioneer AVIC-N1 for free so I guess I'll be trying it out. 1DIN flip up.

Personally, I can't stand the flip-out screens, if that's what you mean. Go with a carputer if you want a double din, and I have no opinion on the single dins. My experiences with Kenwood have been good though, for what its worth.

Yeah, that was my opinion on flip outs too, until one came to me for free. We'll see if I like it when I get it installed. I would have never bought one on my own, either. :dunno:

Keep in mind, Turbo, 2DIN will be a bitch to install and require a lot of modification.

I just don't like the way they look, but can't beat free.

Yeah, the double din will be more work, but it's so worth it. Doing the carputer isn't as much modification as a normal 2din HU though, just relocating the HVAC. Quite a bit more work than a simple single swap though.... And yeah, this is coming from the one that still has her carputer in a freaking box awaiting install.

You MUST have a DIY once it's done

Thanks for the preparation, Frank. He's gonna need it.

Xplod is about the worst thing to happen to mobile audio. It's complete trash.

Nah, i'll back him up... I have the Xplod with built in bluetooth, (so that its all hands free, auto connects etc), and i love it! ****s all over my girlfriends kenwood, has never skipped a beat, and sounds great.

I also love it because i can stream music straight from my phone without wires, or fm transmitters or any other junk.

And yet my Sony Xplod is a killer, so I respectfully disagree with Chad. Combined with my BSW speakers it's the best sound system I've ever had.

I know audio. I've been a playing musician since I was in high school (do the math - that's 40 years ago). I've been into car audio since I've owned cars. I don't "die" for the latest fads or fashions in car audio systems. I've listened to stuff that people swear is the best there is, and walked away wondering what the buzz was about.

Unfortunately, each of us has a different ear, and a different need, when it comes to car audio. This Sony has a nice mix capability, allowing me to bend the sound to exactly what I want, and the BSW speakers are the next best thing to sub-woofers, which I don't want anyway.

You can spend $1,000 for a receiver that doesn't sound any better than the $300 one right beside it. There are so many choices now that it's tough to decide. And there are so many opinions that it's difficult to tell who to listen to and who to shake your head at.

So good luck deciding. Listen to other systems, and make your best choice.

But most importantly, don't let anyone tell you that your choice is "garbage." It fits you, you love its sound, so it's perfect.

I bought the Alpine IDA-X303, problem with youngsters these days is no one listens to CD's or tape when you can just plug in your I Pod. Its not a bad unit, kind of tricky to navigate, but you can adapt any I Pod, MP3 player, XM Sirius, and even a CD changer. Has three amp outs for front, rear, and sub and you can expand it for hands free. You can even purchase an amp that tucks behind the unit that acts more like a power boost than an actual amp at a reasonable cost. It also looks nice, although the color is blue and you cant change it to orange.

Really, I'd love to just plug in my SD card for music and forget discs altogether. But, I don't really wanna pay that much for a head unit right now. I could plug in a USB stick to my old Kenwood, but who wants a USB stick hanging out of their HU? I don't. It was convenient when I was in a rush and hadn't burned to my CD yet though.

I love my old alpine deck. Its been with me since my mk2 VW. Played countless hours of music, and the apple connector even works with the latest generation Ipods and Iphones. Navigation is not very intuitive though.

THIS. The Range Rover has an old Alpine navigation system, it's like they designed it to be as inconvenient and distracting as possible. I hate using it.
