Don***8217;t want to have a hotspot in car transmitting all the time. Apparently there***8217;s no way to completely turn off the WiFi radio if it***8217;s present

 

Yes, a wifi hotspot is probably never used and may invite hackers/government surveillance. Good thought.

 

I do not believe that you will be able to use Apple CarPlay without it, in case that matters.

 

Not sure where you got this, but according to Apple, its wireless Bluetooth or wired connection for CarPlay.

The WiFi hotspot is not active unless you enable it. So nothing to worry about there, just leave it deselected.

Wireless Apple CarPlay uses bluetooth for the initial connection (first time pairing), then switches to WiFi. You cannot have wireless CarPlay without WiFi.

 

Honda does not require wifi to be on. But is also requires a wired connection. So no, wifi is not necessary even if BMW does it that way.

Sorry to sound like a butthead, here, but why did you bring this up to try and confuse people? BMW G30's clearly require WiFi for CarPlay. All cars require WiFi for wireless CarPlay. Bringing up wired CarPlay in this thread seems to serve no purpose other than to say "I'm smart". Yeah - my post comes across as an "I'm smart, too" post.

I just don't want to confuse people about what's required for a BMW G30.

 

runbuh, Bimmerfest allows you to "Ignore" certain users. Click on their user name in this thread, and select "Ignore". Some folks have a habit of repeating irrelevant stuff and then getting combative when they are called out on it. I ignored this particular user over a year ago, and have no regrets.

You have to pay to use Wi-Fi. Just don***8217;t pay or never authorize it. Has nothing to do with Apple car play. The cars do not come with it active, capable but not activated. My car play and connected app work fine without it.

Just to clarify - you absolutely MUST have WiFi installed and enabled to use CarPlay in a G30. A wireless hotspot subscription is another story. This CarPlay/WiFi requirement is documented in your owner's manual, and something that you can confirm in your own car's settings (this is from my car).

 

The BMW will need wifi in order to use wireless CarPlay but it doesn't need the paid hotspot subscription. There's really no reason to not have it anyway since you don't need to activate that subscription unless you really want to.

If you want Airplay, you will need Wifi.

If you want internet connectivity via wifi you will need to pay for the subscription.

@OP, you can disable Wifi, and Wifi Internet Connectivity through i-Drive.

 

short answer - asked dealer and guy at BMW (more reliable) today - cannot remove wifi from a 2020MY.
