If I complete the reset process, could it really make my car not work?

It shows in the picture. The control unit for 650i with a foxwell hand scanner. I am also having issues the the heads up not working since having the windshield replaced. It was replaced with the windshield for the heads up. I was going to try and reset that too, but get the same message.

Our cars have a couple of dozen control units. The HUD has it's own control unit. I would not reset ANYTHING that could cause the car not to run trying to fix the HUD. It may be resetting the KOMBI or CAPPL (I forget which one has the other HUD settings). But for less than $100 you can get an OBDII to USB cable with a fresh copy of ISTA/D and other cool stuff. That will give you the ability to truly diagnose.

I'm sure you checked the HUD button on the headlight control right? I accidently hit it every once in a while and think the HUD died. Hope this is it.

I finally got it to work. While holding down the heads up on/off button, a settings screen popped up on the heads up display. I can scroll through the options you pressing on the button, but can't figure out how to select an option. Does anyone know? I added a picture, but it is hard to see much. I have a 650i convertible.

This might help you out, it appears you've stumbled across a hidden hud menu. There's also the iDrive menu section for the hud which should all be ticked.
