Retrofitting Surround-View and Park Assist?

Companies in Singapore have been offering this for a while and I am considering to attempt this myself...

Originally I was "only" looking to retrofit a rear view camera, but since this is already an expensive effort (particularly due to the required camera module), I am wondering whether it's worth getting surround view (needs new mirrors and cables (?)) as well as park assist as well.

I think I already have the Part Numbers required, although I am not certain about the cables for surround view, as the Part Catalogue offers multiple options (surround view mirror cable, surround view door cable, or complete door wiring including surround view)...

Also I have no idea (yet) how to connect the the park assist control module and sensors - whether those are plug and play (existing wires) or need additional wiring as well.

I contacted one of the companies that do it in Singapore back in the day, but to be honest: The cost was prohibitive and they weren't willing to share instructions anyway, they'd just sell me the parts.

So here's wondering if this is worth a combined effort in order to create a DIY Guide for the community.

Has anyone done it before? Any instructions, guides or part lists you would be willing to share?

Thanks
DD

Hi,
Saw this old thread and i have done the park assistant retrofit (and rear wiew camera)
Basic is that the car need to have PDC front and rear and electric steering servo.
Hardware needed was the control unit (bought from ebay). the sensors and new blinkers for the front fenders to put the sensors in.
Wiring harness i made myself, the most difficult part was to find out what connectors to use for the sensors, and i found out that it is the same as the rear PDC connectors from an X1.
Coding was straightforward, add 5DP to VO and coded AL, PMA and CIC.
What took a while to understand was that i needed to enable the flexray port in the ZGM using tool32.
It works perfect and it is actually a really "cool" retrofit :)

Hi,
General cable routing is:
Right hand side, from PMA box to front fenders:
4 cables for right and left sensors (in fenders), in the front they routed through rubber grommit in the floor board on respective side (cables from left to right fenders to be routed inside the car)
Left hand side from PMA box to ZGM:
A tvisted pair cable for the FlexRay (can be self-made with a drilling machine and 2 normal 0,35mm2 cables)
I used a present earth cnnection point next to the rear fuse box for - (31) and connected the +15N to fuse 134 in rear fuse box.
For detailed wiring, see attached pic. Observe that the wiring is for my car F11 -11/2010

About ZGM
It seem to be 2 different ZGM levels depending on how much equipment the car has. Difference i amount of FlexRay busses they have. My car was equipped with the "high" model, so "all" i needed to do was to enable the FlexRay with tool32. I dont remember the procedure but can look in to it if you want.

F10 Surround View

I have started on this project myself. Acquired the Cameras and ECU. I know that Bimmertech sells a retrofit, but they are asking almost 4k dollars for the setup. So, there HAS to be a OEM BMW document out there to follow to get this installed.

I will create a DIY when I get all the parts, find the .PDF and install it on my car. Need the OEM PDF to start. If anyone can find it, please post. Let make this a great new project.

Any retrofit can be achieved by following ISTA wiring diagram. Use ETK for parts and hunt it online on ebay or order from dealer. I have source the PMA module need to find sensors. So far I have completed High Beam Assist and Lane Departure Warning retrofit, both were very easy. PMA will be a challenge, hope I find all parts on ebay soon. btw. I will also get the new style steering wheel soon, that's another retrofit.

On BMW, everything is possible to retrofit. Absolutely everything, what was possible to order from factory )) And you need good friends, familar with electronics + sometime guys familar with programming of microcontrollers (don't mix it with esys coding, see point 4) ;-)

Just few comments.
1. Dont expect Retrofit KITs from BMW. Such things are available for very limited amount of things. I know kit for rear view camera, for others - nothing.
2. You should know how to use BMW ETK, to choose parts which you need
3. Wiring in most cases you need to do by yourself.
4. If there is no need for FSC - you are lucky )) IF there is a FSC code available to buy in ETK - better to buy it. If there is no such code and retrofit require FSC - then you should make some electronic "workaround", in each case unique.
5. Download and install a BMW Rheingold - here you will found all instructions, how to fully dissassemble your car and assemble it again + all wiring diagrams.
6. You should have an ENET cable, and know how to use e-sys. Without this all retrofits will be useless.

If all points doesn't looks too much hard to do for you - good luck ;-)

PS I've retrofitted (with external help) to mine F10:
B&O instead of Logic7.
Night Vision
GSM control for WebAsto (mine car is pre-lci without build SIM, unfortunately)
M5 steering wheel
ASD - Active Sound Design
and now doint retrofit of EDC ;-))) Electronic Damper Control. Will be biggest mine retrofit ever made.

Hello, all your points are very valid and with some additional help everything is possible. Once I find parts I am looking for ACC retrofit, Advance Drive Assist with Traffic Jam Assist retrofit. I know last 2 bits needs FSC and I need to change Kafas to Kafas2. Do you know how to circumvent around this FSC. I know CAN emulator kit exists for NIVI, do you kmow if something similar exists for the Kafas module.

Hi all,

i#vv done the Retrofit of PMA last Weekend. But it did'nt work. The ECU PMA is not responding and not visible during investigation via Rheingold.

My impression is that my ZGW is not sending any Information on the Flexray Bus.
At the same time i retrofitted Lane Change Warning on the same Bus with the same result.
ECU is not responding at all.

@Rickardg Could you pls have a look for the Procedure to activate these ZGW Port with TOOLS32 ?

My car is a 2014 F10 520d

#15 ·
I had a look insight ZGW with TOOLS32.
Could see 4 Flexray Ports, 0x03 was'nt activ. Afterwards i started enabling of Port x03
but no evidence of an existing PMA module.
Started under Rheingold "flexray init" with no sucess at all.

What you mean i need an 8sk ZGW ? How can find out the version have ?

#17 ·
Yeap, found the Parameter. But i only see Pfad 00-03, seems to be i dont have 8sk ZGW and i have to use pin 11&12.

Will try to use PIN 11&12 since i dont have active steering nor X model. so that path should be available.

I saw that BMW sells only one Version of ZGW. Does it means that 4sk and 8sk is controlled by the ZGW Software ?

#18 ·
After using PIN 11&12 of ZGW and activating Port 0x03 PMA ECU is visible and responsible.
The ZGW Port reamins active until i start Rheingold "Flexray initialization" procedure. After that port 0x02 is disabled. Seems to that the car reminds, depending of VO, what Flexray Port has to be active.

Does anybody know how to enable ZGW Ports 0x04-0x07 on ZGW ? For my understanding it is only one LCI hardware version of ZGW available. So there must be a software solution.
I could imagine that after Programming and coding of ZGW, with an VO using port 0x04-0x07 (5DP for port0x07), all the remaining ports should be active. But just a guess.

#19 ·
Why are you trying to initialize flexray? I believe initializing flexray is the process where the car enables and disable ports depending on your configuration. If yours is working on port 3, I would just leave it.

There is a physical difference between zgw 4sk and 8sk. There is a chip missing on the 4sk that 8sk has.

After enabling port 0x03 using TOOL32 ZGW report an error ´aying Flexray must be initialized. ZGW probably notice the existance of an new ECU (PMA).

I was wondering about the part numbers of ZGW in the elektronic parts catalogue, its the same part number for all possible configurations.
After that i spoke to my brother he works for BMW. He sayd in the original equiment there are different modules straight depending on the configuration.
for retrofitting or replacement ECU there are unviversal ECU available from ECU.

ZGW initializatoon is the process where the ZGW enables and disables flexray port depending on your configuration. The reason the error shows up is because you have port 3 enabled manually when the car thinks it should be disabled. If your park assistant is working, I would just leave it be. The only way to get rid of that error is to swap in a ZGW 8sk and moving the park assistant to port 07.

Hi Jason

I retrofitted the Lane Change warning... and activated the ports manually...
Now in ISTA it shows yellow ZGM with the error that the Flexray is not initialized.
When i try to do it with ISTA it shows me an error that ICM is not responding and aborts.

Any clue how to resolve this?

I had connected parkassit to 0x03 channel and enabled it, Pma is reachable from Rheingold without error but system is in error... ICM and EPS doe snot recevice message from PMA ecu...
i also coded car with 5dp and after start flexray initialization with rheingold and was ok.
my car is f10 pre-lci, does anyone can help me ?
thanks

I hired Bimmer Tech to supply me the cables and provide the installation instructions. They logged onto my car yesterday actually and did the coding. Car works perfectly now. I could not see what settings he changed, but I did get a "stability system" error before the coding took.

Also noted once the settings were put into the computer, had to turn off the car, wait 10 minutes and then coding took. Make sure car is on and running when doing the coding.

Wish I could provide more help. But have not dived into the actually coding of the car myself yet as I was looking for someone that knew how to code to learn the procedures. BadBlack has quite a bit of experience and might be able to point you in the right direction.

If you need install instructions or pointers of what I did during my retrofit I would be happy to provide that to you at least.

Guys I am wondering if Park Assist has side cameras in front bumper or any other sensors than PDC? Or these cameras are only used for Surround View? Main problem is that I am about to buy a car (still not decided) with damaged front bumper and already found a used one with same color but without side cameras. I know there are markers from inside but maybe it's wort finding another used bumper with factory made wholes and side cameras if needed?

This 07'2011 F10 has options:
- S3AG Reversing camera,
- S5AC High-beam assistant,
- S5AD Lane departure warning,
- S5AG Lane change warning,
- S5DP Park Assist,
- S508 Park Distance Control (PDC).

When looking in ETK in front bumper section the side cameras were inactive for this car...

I mean this camera:

The camera you see on the pics are only belongs to the 5DL option Surround View. The parking Assistant PMA has no cams at all. The two sensors for the PMA are located in the left and right hand side flashing panels over the front wheels.
