Ok obviously an easy question I can look up but I’m getting conflicting answers on the web. I bought a used 2009 528i and want to replace the head unit. But which do I have? CIC or CCC?

I'm going to say you don't have either and your car is equipped with M-ASK. Do you have navigation? I see a cubby beneath the CD control panel which is where the CCC or CIC is located and you wouldn't have the cubby if you had either.

My 2010 model year 550 was manufactured in March 2009 and has CIC. I believe that is the earliest production date for CIC in the e60.

Good catch! I didn't realize that MASK was still being offered once CCC became available, but it seems it was. Link below details the various idrive generations.

I think M-ASK with Navigation used a changer in the glove box but I'm not positive because I don't think it was available in USA. You can use a VIN decoder to look up the order options for your car. Here link to one (Free Online BMW VIN Decoder, lookup, check - BVzine.com). You just need the last 7 digits of your VIN. CCC should have Professional NAV option and M-ASK should have Business NAV.

Yes, you have MASK. My 2009 came with MASK as well, even had the newer iDrive controller. I just did a CIC retrofit on it though since I got a good deal and it allowed me to get a nice MMI unit to have Wireless CarPlay. Interesting that nothing happens when you click the Nav button on your controller. When I would hit it the trip computer would display.

Also, I think you should vacuum out that little vent next to your fan speed knob so that your IHKA unit can more-accurately measure interior temp.

What did the total CIC retrofit run you?

Welp… looks like I have the M-ASK system… booo

the wife thinks is should have a reversing camera, so can I get one of these Android-based head units and direct fit it, or do I have to upgrade to CCC first and THEN upgrade?

this car is starting to be more of a pain in the ass than it was worth (2010 E60 535i with M-ASK… just purchased on 9/1/2022… now I know why it was such a ‘great deal’)

Check out AVINUSA.com for android head units. That’s the whole reason I originally asked this question. To see if I was able to upgrade the head unit. I ended up putting an android head unit in as well as a back up camera. Both ordered from avinusa. Definitely a nice upgrade. It’s like having a phone built into the car. Also how much did you pay and how many miles?

The MMI box that I got for my CIC system supports a backup camera. I got a wireless one since I didn't want to run the video wire through the liftgate hinge on the wagon. It's not always the best video quality but it certainly lets me see what I'm doing when in reverse. Why is it that the infotainment system makes you think you got a bad car? I also wasn't impressed with the MASK system but the rest of the car sure has been enjoyable. In my opinion I would suggest finding a used CCC system and get an MMI box for it. You can do CIC but you don't gain much (other than higher resolution screen) and it is more difficult/expensive to retrofit. CCC is almost plug and play once you do very trivial coding to your vehicle.
