I just took my 2013 X5d 70,000 miles into the dealership for a recall and an SCR reservoir tank replacement which was under warranty. They called and said they found another problem on the diagnostic which was the swirl flap and recommended that the whole intake manifold be replaced quoting $2200 for the manifold and labor. Does this seem reasonable? Has anyone encountered this problem?

oops! sorry here is what the dealership gave me.

0x0040D4 - DDE exhaust-gas recirculation controller, position control
0x0042FC - SCR exhaust emission system, efficiency
0x0046B7 - DDE: Swirl flap actuator
0x0046F9 - DDE: reducing-agent active tank temperature sensor signal

I had a similar issue, it is probably not the swirl flaps/manifold. It is most likely the EGR is stuck open, with a failed spring. Let them fix the SCR tank, thank them and take your E70 to an Indy and get the EGR replaced first. It should be about $600-700 with labor. Once I replaced my EGR, a whole bunch of codes went away.

Hmmm, interesting. The SA told me that my car year/model (2013 x5d) had a bad design with the swirl flap and that if replaced it would still continue to collect gunk and could possibly destroy the engine, and that a more permanent fix (which was recommended) would be to replace the entire intake manifold which has been redesigned and would not cause that problem again. I haven't found evidence of a design problem for my year/model and wanted to know if that was true, and if it was, would BMW cover it under some kind of warranty/ manufacturer defect?

He is outright lying to your face & he knows damn well that he is doing it because he thinks you're stupid & has zero respect for you. After you get your car back for the other repairs, I would let him know how you feel about his lying & bring it up to his boss as well. I would be absolutely furious if someone disrespected me like that... What he is attempting to do is outright fraud.

There is no redesigned intake manifold for an E70 newer than 2013, as this was the last year this model was produced (BMW is not going to redesign this part for a discontinued model unless there was a safety recall for that component). As far as I know, the intake manifold on the E70 35d is the same from 2007 all the way to 2013, and I believe it's the same intake manifold as found on the E9x 335D...

oh wow! I appreciate all the helpful answers. sorry for being a noob, this is my first bmw. I bought it new in 2013 and haven't had any problems with it until shortly after the warranty expired after 50,000 miles. I am just worried the maintenance of the car may be too costly if each repair is around this pricetag. Thanks in advance for all your answers!

It becomes more economical if you start building a relationship with a good BMW independent mechanic and not have to use a BMW dealer. Most of your 35d issues down the road will be related to the exhaust system, some of which will be covered by the 10 year, 120K mile warranty. Get a BMW code reader so can do a little research beforehand and get an idea of what the cost will be.

There is more to it than flaps.

A flap equipped manifold has two intake runners per cylinder. One is tangential entering the combustion chamber tangentially so it always swirls, and the other is straight in for high RPM flow but mostly blocked by the flap at low speed.

No, the intake manifold flap controller is built in with the caution to not remove the controller, as during walnut blasting and cleaning, for losing some factory preset.

I guess if you block any of them you have to block them all. My new mechanic says mine are malfunctioning, likely from carbon buildup, so i was going to pull it off and clean it but if you can’t buy the flaps individually I’d be stuck buying a new manifold if they can’t be repaired or just cleaned. Anyone had any luck with an aftermarket manifold? I’ve seen some for under $300 as opposed to $1200 from BMW.
