Hi, i have just been told that the timing chain has broken or slipped on my 2007 (57) 120d M sport 83k.
N47 D20A engine code
The options I have been given are not great. Pay £300 to have head removed and see how much damage been done, if not too bad it will cost £2000, if lot of damage then a replacement exchange engine at £2995 +vat and fitting, poss £4500. Or an engine from BMW £6000.
What should I do, the car is only worth £8500.
I have looked on eBay and there a few sellers offering a fitted engine for between £1595 and £1995.
Are these likely to be ok?
Please help.

You may have resolved the problem with your timing chain by now, but just to let you know I had the same problem for my 1Series 180d. I contacted BMW direct and they gave me 100% parts and the garage reduced their labour by €15 (about £20) per hour. This was out of warranty, but only had 54000 miles and was 2007. It still cost €1850 but that was still a lot less than you were quoting.

Suggest you try your luck with BMW and see what they will offer. From reading other websites, I have come to the conclusion that there is a fault in the crankshaft which causes the timing chain to go. Have you ever heard that?
