What engine combinations are known to work in the E39 when the need arises to replace

I'm trying to collect, for future users with a suspected blown 'engine', what options they have ...

One option, is to replace the entire engine, as eloquently stated by cn90 here:
- Anyone have info/advice for DIY head gasket repair on 2003 525i E39?

Once they decide to 'replace' the engine (as opposed to fixing it as stated here) ...
- My E39 overheated & I need a new head gasket (1)

They then have the option of 'upgrading' to a different engine.

So the question arises, which upgrades are practical?

Here is another engine swap, being contemplated today...
> E39 (1997 - 2003) > Want To Put A 1999 528i Engine In My 2001 525i **Need Advise Please**

whats up. i own a 2001 525 and the engine took a dump. so recently my friend crashed her 1999 528 and the car is toast, but the engine is great. so im buying it off her tomorrow for dirt cheap. my question. i know i have an m54. and am pretty positive she has a m52 due to the year. am i going to have issues with the computers? will it work? what will i have to do to get her 99 528 engine in my 2001 525? also, am i able to use the tall block off her car and completely swap everything off my engine to her tall block? and what are the pros and cons with this older engine? i know its a steel cast correct? is it stronger than the aluminum block? the 2.8 is bigger and has more hp so im guessing its a win win, especially since it has lower miles than my car and im getting her car for 500 bucks. any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

Bluebee,

I am looking to replace my exhaust manifolds (with cats, both front and rear). I found a used set in good condition from a 2001 325ci, that I would install onto my 2003 525iA. My rear cat is bad, I have already confirmed it.

When you did the swap, did you use the E46 or E39 manifolds?

E46: (front: 18407514502, rear: 18407514503)

E39 (front: 18407514498, rear: 18407514499)

RealOEM says they aren't the same part, maybe they are bent differently or the outlet sizes are different? Does anyone have any other insight as to whether this is possible?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

my motor pretty much blew and I'm not trying to swap it with a 328i motor that had rear damage same year was trying to figure out what things I needed to add to make the swap work for example motor mounts or oil filters ETC... all help much appreciated I've been carless for a year now and I'm just trying to get back on the road and live life again.

This related question was asked today ...
> E39 (1997 - 2003) > Quick question, I'm usually a e38 guy, but...

I have a nice 1997 e38 with a good motor and trans, one owner only has 129K on both and runs perfectly. I believe it is the M62 pre TU motor, but I don't know about the trans...

Question is simple, in to what years e39 will this engine and trans fit? I am hoping to find a nice 5'er with a bad engine or tranny, do a swap and ditch the 7 for parts/scrap.

I am not sure about VANOS/Double VANOS etc, it is a little confusing...
  • M52 - single VANOS I6 engine [1997-98 528i]
  • M52TU - double VANOS I6 engine [1999-00 528i/iT]
  • M54 - double VANOS 2.5 liter I6 engine [2001-03 525i/iT]
  • M54 - double VANOS 3.0 liter I6 engine [2001-03 530i]
  • M62 - (no VANOS) "straight up" V8 Engine [1997-98 540i]
  • M62TU - single VANOS V8 engine [1999-03 540i/iT]
  • S62 - double VANOS V8 engine [2000-03 M5]

This related question was asked today ...
> E39 (1997 - 2003) > 00 528 to 530 swap
Hey everyone, i'm in need of a motor. I ran in to the problem of a valve sticking and a loss of compresson in the cylinder. I have a friend that has two motors. A 528 and a 530, i believe the same year. I would like to put the 530 in there. Both has excellen milage...120 & 150.
He has the whole car for the 530. What will i need to do the swap IF i can do the swap? Thanks in advance for the help...
By the way, im a newbie to the clan and i love how you guys share your knowledge. Soon to come is the M5 kit and some extra upgrades..Will definitely post my twist on a beauty that is E39 lol. Thanks

Hi guys, Ive joined and will properly introduced myself later, I just need some quick advice before I buy a car for its engine to use in my car, I don't want to buy it and find out it won't fit!

So I've got a 2002 520i SE E39, the 2.2 is a little gutless but I picked the car up cheap and I like it, I've now been offered a 1999 540i auto with lowish mileage for cheap, it's tatty but the engine is sweet! The car itself is not worth putting back on the road and it's an auto which I'm not keen on, so my question is how big of a job is it to put the lump in mine? I'll have a complete donor car so should have all the bits.

I've done many engine swaps over the years but never in a bmw, I'll be buying the car Sunday if the engine will fit so that doesn't give me long to do my research first hence why I've jumped straight on this thread, hope you can help guys!

Regards,

Simon.

540 uses different mounts and fiffrent subframe layout.

You could modify your mount location but it's just easier to just swap subframes.

Also you'll need the 540 transmission drive shaft and diff.

Now if you wanted to keep the car with a sixer your best bet would be the m54b30 which is a drop in as long as you keep all of the b30s parts (intake, edu, mad, etc)

2004 530i was the first year of the new body style. However, the 2004/2005 530i used the same M54B30 (6cyl) engine that the previous 5-series did from '01-'03. Several other cars used the same engine as well.
330i (ic, ix, etc.) 2001 - 2006
530i 2001-2003
Z3 (3.0i) ??
X3 (3.0i)
X5 (3.0i)

Search on M54B30 to see exact years and models.

you will likely have to swap your existing oil pan, exhaust headers, intake, & coils over to the new engine. These items were often different in these cars

There is also a 2.5 liter M54B25 (525i, 325i, etc.) that will fit and run with some minor work/coding, but that is 40 less horsepower.

Do not attempt to put a BMW v8 engine in it. It will not work without a ton of expense and work.
