X1 & Snow

If I wait for the plows to come through, then any AWD will get me going. But, sometimes I don't have the luxury to wait and need to get out, possibly with 12" of snow on the ground.

For those fortunate this past winter to have their X1, is the ground clearance on the X1 sufficient to get you through the deep stuff?

X1 and snow

I'm thinking of changing my 3 series for an S Drive 2 wheel drive model (new efficient dynamics low CO2 model) and also interested in snow capability of rear wheel drive with winter tyres on. Have heard pretty good reports to date accepting X drive the best option - I'm not an off roader at all.

Ditto here... my wife drove her 3-series vert for three years, without even a hiccup or any basic understanding of how to drive in snow....

I took those winter tires with 20K miles on them, and drove them on my coupe, last winter.. again, no issues..

Very reassuring

Thanks for replying guys. I'm currently torn between a new X1 RWD or increasingly edging towards a few k more and plunge fr a 520 touring to ease the autobahn journey from UK to Austria. Will test drive the latter on Saturday and then conclude. Sounds like both will be fine with winters in snow - the Austrian's are brilliant at road clearance:) two cms in UK causes complete havoc incl airport closures!

I drove my E46 M3 through several snow storms with Dunlop WinterSport M2s. It was very capable. Once the snow got over 4" though, it was just too much for the car. If you are dealing with light now, RWD is fine. For those freak snow storms that pop up 2 or 3 times per year where you get absolutely raped with 2 or 3 feet of snow, you need to have an alternative planned out. In the end, AWD is the better option if you plan on driving in snow a lot. RWD is capable, and BMW DSC is fantastic, but AWD is just simply better. As is FWD.

X1 and Winters

Thx for replies guys. Am splashing out and going for new X3 3 litre with winters. This should get me over any mountain pass and be useful in the UK country lanes and bit more trunk space. Big thank you for replies.:)
