X5 50E charging issues

Maybe it’s me, but I can’t seem to get my 50E to start charging when I plug it in despite the setting to charge immediately. I plug it in and nothing happened. I unplug it then plug it in again and then it stops charging at 2% half the time. Annoying that I have to constantly check on it. The electrician recommended by BMW to install the BMW charger also install a separate box by my electrical panel to prevent overloading our electrical grid so it won’t charge the car when all of the appliances are going in the house….but nothing was running when I plug it in. I’m assuming the car doesn’t have to be locked to start charging…or maybe it does. I can’t seem to find anything written.

I'd start by determining if the issue is within the car, your electrical, or the cable. The fastest and easiest way would be to take it to a BMW dealer with your cable. If you don't want to go to the dealer, see if it charges normally from another source, like a charging station. If it does, then try it with your cable but somewhere else. This way you'll know what needs to be addressed.

Neither the vehicle nor the EVSE will start charging if a lead is not solid...a solid ground is also required, and that could be anywhere from the power input to the panel to the breaker, to the wiring to the EVSE. The instructions usually also call for a specific torque value when tightening down the connections, and if they're not correct, the heat from the current flowing can cause the screws to loosen, messing things up. So, while it could be numerous reasons, it could be in the power getting to the EVSE, the EVSE itself, or the vehicle. Does the OEM supplied FFC work if you plug it into a 15A circuit and the X5? That can have the same issue with grounding or loose connections, but if it works reliably, that rules out the vehicle.
