I recently did some work to try to improve the shifting in my 01 MZ3 (new LT-2 fluid, new clutch master cylinder, new transmission mounts, fresh bleed, etc.). Andy's 02 Z3C car had been my benchmark of "correct" shifting effort. Andy drove my car on Friday and thought my car now shifts better than his. I am still skeptical.
I have resisted the BMW TSB on shift pins because (1) I don't trust any of the local dealers and (2) replacing the shift pins with a new set of the exact same shift pins sort of implies the problem will come back sooner or later.
In discussing the situation with my dad, he pointed out that on the ZF parts diagram from their website (see page 14 of this document: http://www.zf.com/na/Home/M9/M12/M27/M367/S531.pdf, also copied below for reference)...
... ZF is showing 3 bushings (circled in orange) that the shift pins ride in. Compare this to the view of BMW's EPC:
BMW only shows a bushing for one of the three shift pins. EPC quantities agree with the diagram. If this is true, 2 of the 3 shift pins have an aluminum bearing surface, which would be a really poor choice. If you read the ZF document carefully, it implies that some BMW transmissions have 3 bushings, but not all. I am going to call ZF and see if anyone will talk to me about this.
Also reference page 17 of the ZF document to see the ZF version of BMW's TSB on the shift pins. I am going to order a set of shift pins from BMW (about ~$30 of parts) to see if there is a difference between shift pin (specifically, the diameters) item 28 and 26.
