Please tell me this is just an issue with the cap (see attached pictures). In addition, what level should the coolant be at approx. 2 hours after driving the car....the level appeared be at the bottom of the orange rod withing the tank....help.

It wouldn't be the first cap to crumble, but you are due for a cooling system rehab regardless. Certainly get yourself a new cap (<$20) for now but search this forum for CN90's cooling system DYI. By the way the rod should be poking up right to the top of the neck of the reservoir when you remove the cap.

Cooling Overhaul???

Cooling overhaul already???....my new girl only has 44 K miles....I expected to do the overhaul recommended by Mike Miller (Bimmer) at 60K.....but not now....I just did a coolant change/flush a week ago.....I ended up running to New Country BMW in Hartford so they could take a looksie since they did the flush/change for me....they say nothing is wrong......the stick thing was sticking straight out of the hole when they removed the cap a few minutes after I got there.....so I guess that means the level was ok.....anyway...I was able to get a free gallon of coolant out of em.....ill monitor over the weekend and order a new cap......:eeps:

The BMW cooling system is a weak link so keep a good eye on it; for examples of cooling sytem failures, see this thread wth lots of pictures intended to show visually where the cooling system fails on the E39.

Even if you do nothing, you'll want to stock these parts in your garage, because the cooling system WILL crumble on you at the worst possible time.

Print out these DIYs and keep it with your box of replacement parts:
- aioros (1999-2003)
- cn90 (1997-1998, not for my model or year)
- pelican (not for my model or year)
- cn90 refill M52/M54 coolant

- Coolants recommended by BMW)
- E39 fan and shroud removal (Besian)

the stick thing was sticking straight out of the hole when they removed the cap
The reason the stick was mentioned is because it's often MIA (as in this thread).

Sorry but your original post made no mention of mileage - seven year old cars usually have a lot more. With only 44k you you should be good to go. But the coolant level is way too high if the rod is sticking way out the way you described. If you lay a straight edge across the neck of the reservoir the rod should touch it, no higher or lower.

E39 Coolant Issues

Thanks guys...im going to go ahead a buy a new cap......the stick was sticking all the way out mostly likely as I had just driven about 15 mins to the dealer and it was still hot.....when cool the top of the stick is just below the rim of the hole....Ive read up quite a bit on the cooling issues with the E39 and am prepared for the partial overhaul recommended by the "Old School Schedule" in Bimmer at about 60K.:D
