Hi
it was quiet year after figured out most vibrations and so on, few week ago I start noticing some clunk around front suspension area sound like platsic to metal. it's happening every second or third braking application and almost 100% when braking after car was parked a while. Sometimes it clunks when car backing up and brakes applied. Can be from left, right or both sides.
I did check myself and local mechanic confirms everything is tight and nothing to fix.
Brake rotors and pads are 7 month new, outer ball joints 7 month new, CABS replaced 1.5 years ago, engine mounts about a year ago.
The rest of suspension is original and car have 160K km now.
looking for any ideas what and how to check.
Car is AWD.
Thanks for reading this!

Still could be a number of things....if you replaced the cabs with oem's it still could be those, they just dont last very long. If the rest of the suspension is original, could be tie rod ends, sway bar end links, and possibly the spring hats. Hard to tell without hearing it or riding in it. But thats about all thats left that you havent replaced i think.

Just want to update: was looking under the car with wrenches, wigling suspension part, almost nothing. Just found one bolt securing passenger side of CAB bracket was not torqued properly (damn lazy mechanic). It fixed some clunk during hard bracking/acceleration but not everything.

Other most common clunk was because of dust and washed ot lubricant from front passenger side brake caliper/pads probably after winter. Disassembling brake, clean/lubricate fixed completely the problem. Driving 2 weeks without clunking.

I know this is a old post but... was the clunk lasting when it happened (repetitive) or just on clunk?

Happens to me mostly when I am backing up and apply the brakes, it clunks ONCE right when I apply the brakes, hard or soft.
Should i be concerned? - LOL I drove 500 miles of mountainous aggressive driving on Sunday and everything was fine.

Should I be worried? or is this the same problem you had? ...(just a single clunk)
To me it feels like the whole caliper moves a bit but idk how i would test that

Thanks

It's up to you. I didn't expect that I got it fixed. Small vibrations like you have usually from deposits on rotors (sometimes can be fixed by brake bedding procedure if not too late) or small rotor runout because of some other things like rotor is not true to the hub, micro freeplay in bearing but not failure yet, partially worn suspension causing vibration and runout, but more often bad braking habbits.

well its not really a vibration. just for a second the wheel will turn L-R-L-R.. just a tad rigth when i hit the brakes. I'mm guessing i need to bleed them cause one probly kicks it right before the other, if that makes sense? just a guess lol

As far as braking habits, they are good lol I barely use my drakes (downshift ftw!)
Only time i go hard on the brakes was at the tail of the dragon :D so much fun

I just started feeling this problem after I had a warranty company rebuild my motor. They had the car for 3 months (chasing a problem), I got the car back but now I feel a slight clunk when I first apply the brakes. I primarily feel it on the left side front. I Havent services my brakes in over 2 years besides the BMW brake pump recall... I am shocked to hear a good cleaning to the calipers and pads did the trick.

This is something I can handle and was going to pull rim to take a look anyways. Glad you posted this and resolved the issue. I know it could be something else but a good cheap first start. I will post also if this works.

Hi! I glad you found info useful and I want add some tips. Same problem was described in other forums including 5 series and e90. So, when caliper removed and braking pads removed from caliper, check hummer spots on brake pads. You may find some goo or glasing from accumulated brake dust and brake lubricant. Make sure you remove it before re-lubricating pads where those touching brakets and caliper. See picture for details: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=8287&pictureid=30816 Goo actually makes pad sticking to the braket and not retract with caliper after braking over and next time when you brake, caliper hitting the pad and makes that annoing sound.
That goo difficult to remove with brake cleaner even by scrapping, that's why on other posts people use file for that. But make sure you don't filing metal, otherwise you actually may get clunking worse especially during reverse-forward braking when parking for example.
Good luck!

JMan, that sounds like your head bearings on their way out, not brakes. This is a normal wear item and you feel a "click" when you hit the brakes. This is from slop in the bearings. Either coming loose or just need to be replaced. You can try and tightening your triple clamp bolt down a bit and this might help, or give you a little more time to fix.

This is caused by too many wheelies/stoppies and no maintenance.

This clunk drove me nuts for about a year after installing Wagner Thermoquiet pads on all four wheels. At first it started on one front wheel and gradually progressed to all four. Last summer I took one front wheel apart and analyzed the source of the clunk as being a lack of friction between the pad backplates and the caliper surfaces, allowing the pads to slide within the caliper under light brake pressure. So on a hunch (against the recommendations of Wagner) I applied Permatex disc brake quiet to the backplate of each pad. It has been at least 6 months since I have heard the brakes clunk. I have declared it fixed!!!

A number of threads have been asking for suggestions to fix a clank/clunk when either lightly braking or reversing while braking. Most started after installing new brake pads but no one found a solution short of replacing the pads again with a different brand. I offer my solution to help other in this situation. Sorry if this thread is unrelated.

Perhaps my comments could be moved to the correct thread? Thanks. :)

Clunk when break or sometimes turning

I had an annoying clunk you could feel in steering wheel and seemed like fame from the drivers front. I had new ball joints, new struts, new sway bar links, and new control arm bushings already. I was told to check inner tie rods so replaced inner and outer tie rods. Still had problem. Turns out the motor mount had gon bad and the clunk was the engine sloshing around. The old mount came out in two halves. Definitely check those if over 10 years old.

Hello, I have a 2016 BMW 535i with the N55 motor. When I some to a stop and I accelerate the vehicle. I can hear a cluck sound from the driver side. If I accelerate slowly, I don't hear it. I check everything and replace the lower control arms. Could it be the subframe bolt? Thank you for the help. Jose
