Went to start the car Saturday and drivetrain malfunction came on immediately, heavy smoke from exhaust. None of the warning signs have been present. Turned it off immediately and had it towed to the dealer.
Vehicle is out of warranty with 57,000 Got the call today 4,800 $ bucks without tax to replace all of them. Three bad ,two in one bank one in the other. Unfortunately my third party extended doesn't cover this. Very frustrating since the car has been out of warranty( February 2014). The car has needed crankcase vent hoses- both sides, manifold pipe , vacuum pump, software updating because dealer couldn't inspect the car and now this. This vehicle has been in the shop more times in the last five months than I've driven it. Repairs totaling close to ten thousand in less than 7 months out of warranty.
Love the car, but sitting here thinking to myself is this really worth it. My day started at 3am with 8 hours of sleep left I'm posting and googling info on a 100k pus car. Where's the incentive?
Btw my SA did say over the phone that she would see what she could do for us. It would be nice to see bmw step up.

It is a known and seemingly documented issue. Seems like Marcus (txstyle) had some luck with this approach. Good luck

I noticed as I researched extended warranties that several specifically stated they didn't cover fuel injectors. Sorry you had this happen, I agree we should expect more. I am still shopping these policies trying to find one that includes injectors. Anyone have one that does?

sp-sp-sputter! 10k in repairs on a car that has 57kmiles. That.Is.Insane. No words. 5grand to get it going again. So you have no after market warranty? I gotta admit, you know what everyone on here says. No warranty=dont have a 7 in your garage. Still, the design flaws on the 7's is crazy. Sorry to hear about your issues. I'd dump it as soon as it was fixed. Another user on here did that and we havent heard from him since. Forgot what he got.
On a serious note, I say trade it in for a LS600. Or a truck like someone else just did.

I've had my i3 since August and just yesterday my car died and the drivetrain malfunction light came on. Obviously still under warranty, but still...so soon?

I had mine done under warranty. I think the cost was under 2500, but then I had to go back a few days later for another 800. You can call other dealers and get prices. Then bring those, if lower, to the SA. Also, you can check your NY laws to see if you can go about this in a different way.

Get a way to fix it and sell it! Most of these cars are prone to give you lot of problems down the road! Real money pit.
I spent already over 7K dollars trying to fix this car. I took my loses and sold the car one month ago.
If you love 7 series get a brand new one on lease and return it after 36 months!
I will never buy used BMW 7er again!

P.S. My car had the same problem as yours. Replaced injectors, spark plugs, all adjacent plastic tubes, battery, coils. In spite of this, every other day I was getting Cylinder#5 misfire which would trigger the dreaded DTM ligh and message on!

Not sure if this is related, i bought my car with 48000 miles and 250 miles after ownership I got the exact same message. Took it to dealer and they said the tubes (i will look on paperwork to see what name) were clogged. They changed whole engine and both turbos. I hope that fixes any little problems or whatever was wrong and message came on.

My 2009 had 23k miles and all the issues mentioned here. I got all injectors replaced, carbon cleaning, plugs, and still had misfires and rough idle. I traded the 7 in on a 2011 335i M-Sport with warranty till 12/2018. Bmw goodwilled the repairs but I could not handle all the issues with the F01. My advice, get it running and get rid of it.

GASP! So, with the present problem we're talking close to $15K in repairs in less than a year. Spending that kind of money might make sense for a race-car, but not for a daily-driver just 7000 miles out of warranty. Think more to come! I would give up on this car if it were me.

i am currently having the same problems right now. Drivetrain malfunction. I still can drive it and no smoke or anything, but i know something is not right, especially when the car does the jerking motion when i start it and back up in the morning. I am out of warranty and i have dealer's appointment in 10 days. I'm really hoping it's not these injectors, which the dealer told me CA$400. You guys might get a good deal from getbmwparts.com, which another member here (J750) told me. Unfortunately, they don't ship to Canada, so i am screwed again. I'm starting to get used to the screwing!!

Jessen have your dealer do a high pressure fuel cleaning. It should cost $200. Grab a six pack of 20 gallon Techron. Use two bottles of Techron per tank. Blow out those tanks with heavy use of your right foot in sport plus mode. As you can see there are numerous members that have changed plugs, coils, and injectors that continue to have issues. We performed these repairs and continued to have hesitation accompanied by the Drivetrain malfunction warning until we regularly followed a method to combat carbon build up. You have to try to push the carbon build up out. We have had the same issues with the N63 in our 550i GT. With constant Techron, high octane fuel from a top tier gas supplier, with yearly high pressure fuel cleanings we have been able to keep our carbon build issue at bay. We were beside ourselves with this issue, but we have found a way to manage the problem....knock on wood. Auto zone regulary has two for the price of one sales of Techron. It is worth the extra $12 a tank to us. To perform the walnut blasting procedure on the N63 requires an enormous amount of labor to access the intake. I can only tell you what our experience has been. As you can see the dealers are going to throw parts with expensive repair bills at the N63, which frequently do not combat the true issue which is carbon build up. The high pressure fuel system cleaning must be done by a technician that understands the importance on doing a thorough service. Best of luck. It is a terrible feeling. Sorry for your troubles.

@Rogue, many thanks for your kind message, it's much appreciated. This is very kind of you.
Yeah, i'm getting worked up because of this issue and what i hear all the time. As i know nothing about car mechs, i tend to send the vehicle to the dealer and bear the costs and bs i hear. But i just go along what they say as i know nothing.

so, you suggest using 2 bottles of Techron (is that 20gallons each) in the fuel tank and drive the car in sport plus mode? I usually use 91 gas from Petro or Esso. Sometimes, i use the 94 gas as well, but i was told not to use it too often, is that right?

What is the walnut blasting procedure?

Thanks for your kind help Rogue. You're very kind.

It's just that in my opinion you are in crisis mode..I have been there. You just want to try to push some of that Techron through to attempt to knock some of that carbon out. I have not heard that running 93 octane could be a bad thing for our engines. The walnut blasting is a method to clean the intake out. It is relatively easy process in the I-6, but it requires a great deal of labor to do it in the N63. I have never heard of a dealer performing that service for warranty. Have them do a thorough high pressure fuel system clean, and run the highest octane with the Techron. It just that there is only so much you can do so it is worth a shot being that your other options can't guarantee a fix, but they are guaranteed to be costly. Your issue is fixable. It just may take a few trips back and forth to the dealer.

thanks Rogue, thanks for your help. I'll certainly do that. i have an appointment with the guys at the dealer in 10 days and i will surely tell them to perform this test first of anything else.

For what it's worth, I have always used Techron in my vehicles. At present, I'm using it in my 991 and P4S. Great stuff!

what's the usage frequency?

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum and was searching for info on my similar problem. The other day the engine malfunction, reduced power message came on in my '09 750Li and I took it to the dealer for inspection. Turns out 3 injectors were bad so they replaced them all under the CPO warranty (as well as a few other associated parts). I'm debating now whether to sell while it has new parts, is in great condition and has decent miles (just under 50K) or hold onto it a while longer. It's a hell of a machine and I'd have to turn it in but don't want to cash out my retirement making the repair shop richer. :dunno:

Yes - you should sell it. That's the only way to guard against issues like this. Big bills are more the rule than exception with these cars unfortunately.

Had the DTM today on our 2011 750Li M Sport with 11,000 mi on it. Sounds a little different than what was stated here. Wife drove the car to work, then some other errands and went to grab the kid from school. Tried to start car up and got the DTM. No black smoke, car acted like it was flooded. She let it sit for a few minutes, started it up and drove home fine. She left it at the house and took my car. When I got home from work, I drove it and had no problem, till I tried to restart it after a short trip to store. I did the same thing she did and let it sit for about two minutes, then drove it home no problem. Check engine light is on. This exact scenario happened to another 2011 we were test driving for the afternoon. Dealer said it turned out to be the fuel pump sensor and the car was flooding itself. Cant get into dealer till 12-2. We have a third party extended warranty. I'm considering finding a good independent mech who accepts our warranty and seeing what they say.
