I know this topic of In-Dash CD player installation or DICE installation has been covered in different forums but specific info is scattered, also no write-up for DICE in-dash install so I will try to do a write-up here for newbies.

Car is 1998 528i: Stock M.I.D., and Stock cassette player.
-------
My needs are:
1. In-dash CD Player
2. DICE Unit for Ipod (However, you might want to argue that if you have DICE for Ipod then why need a CD player? Well there are moments that you just grab a CD and want to listen in the car (i.e. no time to transfer to Ipod etc.), just want the ***8216;best***8217; of both worlds***8230;.:)
3. Most write-ups refer to trunk installation, involving running wires to console, then the risk of theft as the Ipod sits in the console. I will show the ***8220;Glovebox***8221; installation with DICE Unit hidden behind the M.I.D. Glovebox installation is nice because the Ipod is hidden in the Glovebox, away from thieves***8217; eyes.
-------

1. I got my CD Player from:
www.midwestelectronics.com
(They are US authorized Blaupunkt dealer as well for repair for Blaupunkt Electronics). Although you can buy a Business CD Player from ebay etc. with risks, the service at Midwest Electronics is unbeatable:
- I have known them for 10 years (West suburb of Chicago)
- $259 + shipping (they dropped the price recently), so although this was listed on their website as a ***8220;refurbished***8221; item, when I received it, the CD player looks brand new without a scratch, exactly as the salesman told me! So for the price and service, it is unbeatable, much better than ebay etc., IMHO.
- warranty for one year.

2. The DICE Unit came from Tom from european auto source; excellent service:
(Tom, btw, if you want to download some of these pics for your website***8217;s tutorial, and since there is no info on 1998 528i yet on your website, go ahead to upload them to your website!!!)

--------
PROCEDURES:
a. Copy the FM channels on a piece of paper because you will lose the FM memories.
b. Use a Towel to protect the gear knob etc.
c. In addition to the Ipod Cable that you order with the DICE kit, it is also useful to use an ***8220;Aux***8221; Cable ($5.95 from Radio Shack) for MP3 Player etc.
d. Remove the M.I.D.: Pull the Volume knob, Torx #10 counter-clockwise

e. Remove the Cassette Player: held by 2 Torx #10 screws.
f. The connector in the back of the Cassette Player (or CD Player is held by a plastic clip, lift it UP and gently pry it out).
g. The DICE Unit goes ***8220;in between***8221; the CD Player and the OEM Connector (see diagram).
h. NOTE regarding the small connector at the bottom of the CD player: the ***8220;Yellow***8221; tab faces UP. Pull the Blue Tab, insert the small rectangular connector COMPLETELY inside so it is flushed with the large connector, re-insert the blue tab and make sure you cannot remove the small connector after the Blue Tab is in.

i. Read the DICE installation instructions, and set the tabs according to your need (Ipod vs MP3 Player).
j. The Business CD player: secure it in place using 2.5mm Hex wrench (not Torx #10).
k. NOTE: ***8220;Hide***8221; the DICE Unit in such as a way that it sits JUST BELOW the M.I.D. This is because let***8217;s say you initially set the tabs for Ipod. Let***8217;s say later if you have an MP3 Player, all you have to do is slide out the M.I.D. using Torx #10, flip the DICE switches to MP3 Player and re-install the M.I.D. (a process that should take less than 60 seconds).

l. Make sure the Ground and Antenna cables are attached properly to the back of the CD Player.

Enjoy the Music***8230;***8230;***8230;.:)

Why don't you add a little drop of solder on the tip of the antenna connector?
Your year may be different than my year.

I posted the same DIY on bimmerforums. Read posts #5 and 13 by "m5hoot", he is a ham radio operator so he knows his stuff.
Basically a little bit of solder will solve the problem. The solder basically makes the antenna connector center pin "fatter" ---> better connection.
Report back if this trick works for you (I hope it does):

Alex,

But reading through your posts, I am still confused. Do you have a picture of your current setup incl. antenna connectors?
Actually you can do it to both antenna connector(s) that you will be using.
How many antenna connectors do you have?

Anyway, Yes re soldering the tip.
To practice, get a nail (wood nail) with same size 1-2mm in diameter and solder the tip of the nail.
Basically making it 1/10 mm thicker or something like it: blue is factory pin, red is a thin smidge of solder material:

Trick: Get a shipping carton box (such as carton box holding 12 bottles of beer), reduce its height to fit, turn it upside down over the gear selectror area so:
- The box protects that area from scratches.
- The box raises to a platform so you can place your items such as DICE, cable etc.

Just joined the club with a 2002 530i with Business CD, no changer.

With the current silverline pro, am I reading correctly that I can just install it behind the radio, and don't have to worry about installing it in the trunk anymore?

And can I set it up to display text on the MID, but maintain control with my Touch?

I want to be able to control volume, skip forward back with the steering wheel controls, but I don't want to make the Touch a "slave" to the Dice. I want to be able to mount it on the console and use it to navigate through my music.

Can I do this with the latest unit? (And install it in-dash (behind the radio)?

UPDATE,

After 3 years using DICE Ipod, I decided to move the Cabling (DICE and Aux) to the cupholder area. So this is some "red-neck engineering" for those who are interested:

- Torx#10 or Allen 1.5mm key to remove MID unit.
- Push your hand behind to push the HVAC outward to get room to maneuver.
- Remove the Cupholder (held by 2 Phillips screws) and bring the wiring down on each side of the cupholder.
Use a magnetic Pickup tool to avoid dropping the Phillips screws.
- I place DICE on the Left and Aux cable on the Right as shown.
Not the best elegant setup but I am happy.
- When parking car in public, simply throw a small piece of Kleenex over it and a newspaper over it (to hide the DICE cable).

I love this cn90 update!

The BIGGEST problem with the DICE, by far, isn't which mount to get (which everyone obsesses about initially); it's the FINAL LOCATION of the DICE connector to the iPod.

Since you must fiddle with the iPod at least twice a day (and probably more), where the iPod eventually sits is the most important usability feature. The glovebox, for me, is just way too inconvenient under these circumstances.

One danger area though, in my humble experience ... is we may need a clear description of "how to remove the cupholder without breaking it".

In my single experience, I just could not get the cupholder out without destroying it. But I didn't know about the HVAC/IHKA trick.

Just for the record, I had to dig up this picture so I'm adding it here so that it's more easily accessible since a lot of people seem to have a problem with the removal of the MID allen quarter-turn set bolt.
- E39 (1997 - 2003) > 528i stock radio removal

Here is my MID which, for my 2002 525i, clearly uses a 1.5mm allen wrench.

Just for the record, I did an 'aux input' search in the bestlinks to find this (among others):

This was posted today ...
> E39 (1997 - 2003) > Help taking out the MID, god help me.
So after 3 days of research and attempts to figure it out myself I have given up and hoped that maybe someone on this forum could possibly know how to take the MID out when you have no screw under the volume knob.

I bought a new stereo that I was hoping would be a piece of cake, and fun to install but turned into 3 days of pissing me off.

To me it looks like the previous owner did one hell of a job opening the unit when he installed that worthless ipod cord. As you can see the area where the bolt is suppose to be is all ripped apart and there is no bolt there period.

So after doing all the research I could I tried the attempt where I go through the AC unit to find that there was no possible way I could reach the MID's hinges.

Those are two photos of my sticking my phone into the AC unit and taking a picture of the bottom of the unit. Hard to see anything, but it is mainly to ask or show how the heck do I reach the radio :dunno:

If anyone could be of any help, please do so and it will be much appreciated.

P.S: Do you think that I could call my local dealership to help me with the issue over the phone?

P.S.S: How much do you think it would cost if I drove it to a dealership to ask them to take the radio out for me, if all else fails?
