Hi guys- trying to help a member of another board I frequent- no one, including BMW dealership knows the location or part number of the starter relay. AKA "we know nothing, bring it in so we can replace everything under the hood" I told him I suspect it's under the passenger cabin filter- but by not knowing which it is- it's all guess work. Any insight I can share with him? I will point him to this thread so he can add info too- he's got a 528i if theres any differences. his car has been down for a few days now, did everthing from new battery to new key- no power to starter. thanks guys- Mark

Hey ppl I am the owner of that car. 1998 528i Sports edition. I put the key in and nothing! no noise from the starter and I have already put in a new battery, new key, new ignition switch... so now I am trying to find the starter relay. The starter's main bolt has power but the solenoid doesnt (when key turned). Any info would be great. And thanks again Mark!

ya know this really is making me angry- I can't imagine how the guy who owns the car feels- do you think one of you could look at a bentley and tell him where it is? or otherwise try to help a fellow e39 owner? He's spent hundreds in the past week trying to fix it. I can't honestly believe no one over 2 whole forums has no answers for him. What a joke- the dealership can't supply you a simple part number- real oem list "various relays" Stuff like this makes me alot less confident about keeping my car any length of time.

The starter relay sits in a relay panel above the glove compartment. You have to remove the glove box and drop it down. The relay panel looks like this little white storage tray, and it has 4 relays in it - a tall black one in the back, and three short white ones in front. The starter relay is the short white one furthest to the left. FYI the relay panel also has 2 fuses on the side of it - one 50 amp and one 40 amp. Bentley lists a designation number of K6324, but I don't know if this will help with BMW as far as a part number goes. It's all that's listed, though. Good luck.

Starting Issue with my E39 525i

Hi Folks, this may not be right forum for this question.........but here goes:

Of late, when I start my 02 525i, it sputters and quits; when I start again "all is well" and the car runs fine. Wife and I just took it on 600 mile round and got 33.6 MPG. But the starting issue remained present on the trip and has continued since we got home. I am running gasoline that does NOT contain ethanol. Seems like this may be a vaccum leak on initial start-up, but I really don't know. And except for this issue, the car runs fine.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Dunno if it helps but I typed /starter motor F3 in the bestlinks and it came up with these references:
- Where is the starter motor located (1) & an M52 starter motor DIY (1) (2) & removing the 540i starter motor in one hour (1) & the BMW TIS (1) and an E38 740iL starter motor DIY (1) (2) & how to remove the M52 starter motor without removing the intake manifold (1) (2) & what special tools are needed (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) & where is the starter motor relay (1) (2)

On most BMW’s probably starting around 1999 there is no starter relay. The EWS directly sends power to the starter.
