I have a 2005 5 series 525i only 53200 miles with active steering. I looked at my Fault Memory (OBD-2 reader) and a combination of errors showed up, without any "Check Engine Light On" . Dealer thinks is Control Unit of DSC but he is not 100% sure w/o replacing several modules with a cost of over of $1800, and maybe that will fix it.. He did mention that due to location of DSC engine compartment, it gets very hot and potential going bad ! The codes were:

1. 00619: AL Vehicle ref. speed or direction of travel uncertain or not available.
2 00CE96: Message (wheel speed DSC , 0x0CE) faulty, receiver active steering transmitter I
3. 00CE9A: Message (wheel tolerance adjustment, 0x374) faulty, receiver active steering, tran
4. 00CE9C: Message (status, DSC, 0x19E) faulty, receiver active steering transmitter DSC

Any recommendations or thoughts were the problem may be ? Looked at all the threads but did not see anything....

Thanks

With all the rain, snow, ice and cold mine has sat in the last few days it wouldn't surprise me if a sensor got soaked or something that simple

The bad part is my power steering pump was making some racket earlier so I need to figure that one out. The fluid for it is $26 a quart so I hate to mess with it too much. If it were cheap I'd start with flushing it with new fluid.

Weird that it was perfectly fine a week ago and the errors came up as soon as I started the car

Could very easily have air in the system. Maybe lift the front end and cycle the steering back a forth a few times with the pump cap off to see if that will bleed it? Keep an eye on the ps fluid level - It can drop quickly and starve the pump.

Few additional pieces of information….

1. I live in San Diego so weather is outstanding and no moisture of any type (snow or rain).

2. Also Left Speed Sensor was replaced.

3. When I tried to clear those codes with a OBD-2 Scanner, I was not able to do it, also the dealer was not able to clear them, which lead him to believe is a communication problem with “DSC” Communication Module as mention in my original tread (due to its location and the associated heat where is located. He did mention that they been replacing those on a regular basis on a 9 – 10 year car but not with only 55K miles like my car).

4. However when I got home, done some reading and played with the OBD-2 scanner to erase the codes. The way I was able to do it was by holding “DTC” button more than 10 seconds so that “DTC” will be turned off and “DSC” also gets disable. Codes were still there. However I was able to clear them with the scanner. Dealer does not know this yet.

5. Dealer sent a note to BMW NA Eng. Department to see what is the problem based on those types of combinations errors. Hope to get an answer this week and determine the next step.

Will keep you posted.
