Update 8/20/2013: I tried to go through and add part numbers to everything. These are done to the best of my ability, but please do your own research to be sure!!

So, I decided I was going to do a CCC retrofit, but the further I got into researching parts, the more I realized I might as well just do a CIC retrofit for about the same price. I've seen threads on this, but none that really made it as cut and dry as it probably should be, so hopefully this thread helps.

All my parts are starting to come in, so here my thread on it:

Here's what you need (will be updated as I go):

BMW made parts:
-CIC unit - $1000 on eBay, (65129199616 I think) included other parts noted below (actually I bought it outside of eBay to get the price lower, but that's not really the best idea usually)
-Display ("CID") - Included (65829224346)
-iDrive controller (optional) - Included (65829240957)
-Connector to hook up new iDrive controller - Included (Tyco/TE 968813) - available at http://www.onlinecomponents.com/te-connectivity-amp-brand-9688131.html?p=43816490 Edit 9/15: I believe BMW part number 61138380696 is the same and will work as well
-CID CAN/power connector (61136954526) - Included
-CIC cable, connects to CID for video signal (61119185171) - $38.50
-USB Port (61319167196) - $26.99
-USB Port cable (61129196805) - These are back ordered so I ordered two of the CIC video cables and shaved part of the connector to make it work. Will report back if any issues doing this Update 8-6-13: THIS DID NOT WORK!!- Update 8-13-13: I WAS WRONG. IT WORKED JUST FINE.$38.50 (correct version is cheaper but back ordered until mid-August. Update 8-6-13: ECS Tuning has these in stock now. I'm going to send back one of the video cables (the one I didn't modify obviously) and have already ordered the correct cable. It will be here Thursday.. Until then I'm stuck with European maps, lol.
-Trim piece around iDrive controller (comes from the 6 series model) - Included (51169169999)
-Trim piece that goes around the CIC slot - Included (51456976361 for black, must have lower piece from CCC, existing piece is fine if available)

-Optional: LCI climate control assembly (buttons are slightly larger to better fit the CIC trim) - did not purchase this, but I found one for $129 I'm thinking about buying

Aftermarket Parts:
-CAN emulator to activate navigation, etc. without paying BMW big bucks for their activation codes (find on eBay) - $100
-Updated 2013 maps (find online, put them on a 32GB USB drive) - Free
-FSC code for updating maps (find on internet for < $50) - $49 Update 8-6-13: Received my FSC code, but you can't put it in until the system detects a USB drive with the map update on it.. and my USB port doesn't work yet due to trying to make a video cable work, SO, I can only hope this code is valid (SEE UPDATE). UPDATE: THE CABLE WASN'T THE PROBLEM. THE ISSUE IS THE SOFTWARE ON MY CIC IS TOO OLD TO UTILIZE USB TO UPDATE THE MAPS. I HAVE TO USE 2012 DVD'S FOR NOW
-"FAKRA" GPS antenna. (ebay, $15 or less if you're willing to wait on a shipment from China) - $15 (can be had for $5 if you're patient). Update 8/20/13: Not needed if you have CCC prep or CCC. See later posts about the connector in the trunk, TCU, etc.
-Misc stuff from Radio Shack (I bought way too much stuff) - $30

I'll post some pictures as I get into actually doing the retrofit. Hopefully today I will have most of my parts and by Saturday have everything I need to get it installed. I'll post a lot of pictures and everything I do coding wise when trying to get it to work.

Total thus far: $1,297.99 (if my math is right)

wow, what a great thread! I'm drooling over doing this on my 06 M5

I have a billion questions at this point but the main one, I'm pretty sure somewhere in the thread someone said that the e9x CIC would work in an e60, is that right? Obviously the face of it will not fit the e60 panel but otherwise will it all work the same?

As for combox, my m5 has BT already, does that mean I already have the wires and just switch out the BT unit for the combox?

Sorry for the possibly dumb questions but I've only started reading tonight and I'm trying to get my head wrapped around all of the parts of this car.

My previous car was an e34 540 so quite a huge technology jump.

Sorry, my photobucket account keeps going over the free limit. I'll pay to upgrade it for a few months in the next few days. That should bring all the pictures back for a while at least

Hello, maybe I post this in an wrong thread, but I'm asking anyway and please moderators, move this post in the right thread if I'm wrong.

I've made my own retrofit from CCC to CIC on my E90 2006. I've activated the VIM for it. Now my problem is HOW TO CHANGE DVD CHAPTERS WHILE PLAYING DVD?

I have an DVD with music videos , but I can't change chapters.

Any idea? I need a special made DVD or what?

Thank you.

Hey Schpenxel,

I just did the CIC install in my 06 E63 M6. I have it working but it doesnt have any sound as of right now. Can you help me?
What have you done so far? Just physically installed it? What coding, if any?

It's almost certainly a coding issue. If the CIC came out of a car with logic7 and yours doesn't have that, then it won't be sending audio out properly to the speakers

Also, sorry to all about the PM's being full--for better or worse they seem to fill up faster now that I'm not around as much. The 100 message limit is a bit ridiculous IMO. If paying for a membership raised it to a real number I'd just pay for it, but 200 isn't really going to help much either

You are the man!

I just bought an ICOM too and upgraded everything on my 545i. It now says "Last treated by: ISTA-P 2.52.2.002." Was CIP 15 before! It now plays MP3s from the DVD drive at least! Strangely I didn't need to code the feature.. I was about to, and it started playing as soon as I put a disc in!

Anyway, we seem to have similar cars (and similar problems along the way!) I also have M-ASK with Logic 7 (and business navigation).

I just bought a CIC controller.

Do you think the CIC controller will work with M-ASK? Just so that I can get that little job done / out of the way until I feel like chucking a load of money at the rest of the kit? I know the connector is different..

AH what the heck.. just 3 months late

Yes, I think it will work. I could be wrong, but I'm almost certain some of the last E60's came with MASK and the newer style "CIC" controller.. so it should be possible

CIC Buttons no longer lit?

I have a pre-LCI car and just like many others, I tapped into the power wire for lights from the hazard switch and ran a wire down to CIC pin 14 to make my CIC buttons backlit just like the others in the car - until a couple days ago.

I pulled out the CIC just to check connections. I still had ( ~5v is what I measured?) voltage on the jumper wire I had routed down to the CIC harness area, so I wonder if the bulb/LED has gone out inside that panel.

Is 5v too low - perhaps it is a cold solder joint up where I spliced into the hazard harness? If that is not it, then has anyone else lost their lights and solved it? Perhaps you can open up the back of the black panel (volume knob and buttons on the front of it) that clicks into place on the CIC to get to the bulbs/LEDS? Or will that be impossible, so you have to find a donor piece to swap in? If that is it, anyone have a good source for the part?

Amazing that we are now dealing with retrofit parts wearing out?

Thanks!

The part you are referring to is 65839206068. I highly doubt it's defective, I'm leaning towards the fact you have a bad connection somewhere, either in your quadlock or your source.

Good luck.

I have a CIC from a E90 that i want to use in my E60 LCI.

Instead of buying a new CIC front panel facia for E60 from dealer can i instead use a M-ask II (buisness CD) frontpanel for E60 instead?
They look the same and also the connector?

Here is a shot from the rear. Anyone with a E60 CIC frontpanel that can compare?

Thanks!

Hey guys, I just installed the CIC and before I had a chance to wire in the emulator, I plugged the harness in just to see if my wiring to the screen was good and what do you know? The CIC worked fine including navigation. I don't understand how that can be as the CIC came from a donor 2010 car and mine is a 2008 LCI. (I had already coded the VO for the CIC using ncsexpert before I even started the transplant procedure ). Should I just reassemble everything or should I wire in the emulator 1st?

Thx

Great write up! I got my 2006 BMW 525ix 6 months ago and it seemed like someone already played with the idrive. The Aux seemed to be fitted in nav. Not 100 sure. Also blutooth, because that option didnt show when i did the vin decoder thing for BMW. I dont have that cubby thing at the bottom as well. Currently im debating if I should do this. More so because there are 2 E60s in my area that are wrecked and are being parted out. Both of them are Xi's lol. And I think one has all the components needed. Although im afraid the blutooth and the aux would need to be coded again. And I dont have any coding software. Hopefully those 2 cars are still going to have all the parts by the summer when Ill save up enough money. Reason why... Im in college lol. Unless something else pops up, like an aftermarket unit.

Hi Guys. Brilliant informative guide, so big thanks to schpenxel and the guys for all the info. (its taken ages to read through it all)

this weekend we done the CCC to CIC retrofit on an E60 520d 2008 LCI. we already had the newer Idrive controller so swapped out the sreen, cables and main navi unit. plus added the USB to the glove box and a 3rd party GPS receiver.

So far no CAN bus addapter fitted.

when the new CIC was first powered up EVERYTHING worked great without any coding (exept the GPS lock) ie all the navi etc.

but.

after the car was locked up and went to sleep, ie the next morning the navi option was greyed out.........GRRRR.

then we messed up with the coding and managed to mess it all up and ended up with a DEAD CIC with a white screen !!!!! OOPs lol.

after another attempt at the coding were are back where we started......ie all working but with no navi (greyed out).

so my question is, can i get the navi working with just coding etc or do i need to buy the CAN bus adapter?

the guy we bought it said just coding?

cheers all.
