Update 8/20/2013: I tried to go through and add part numbers to everything. These are done to the best of my ability, but please do your own research to be sure!!

So, I decided I was going to do a CCC retrofit, but the further I got into researching parts, the more I realized I might as well just do a CIC retrofit for about the same price. I've seen threads on this, but none that really made it as cut and dry as it probably should be, so hopefully this thread helps.

All my parts are starting to come in, so here my thread on it:

Here's what you need (will be updated as I go):

BMW made parts:
-CIC unit - $1000 on eBay, (65129199616 I think) included other parts noted below (actually I bought it outside of eBay to get the price lower, but that's not really the best idea usually)
-Display ("CID") - Included (65829224346)
-iDrive controller (optional) - Included (65829240957)
-Connector to hook up new iDrive controller - Included (Tyco/TE 968813) - available at http://www.onlinecomponents.com/te-connectivity-amp-brand-9688131.html?p=43816490 Edit 9/15: I believe BMW part number 61138380696 is the same and will work as well
-CID CAN/power connector (61136954526) - Included
-CIC cable, connects to CID for video signal (61119185171) - $38.50
-USB Port (61319167196) - $26.99
-USB Port cable (61129196805) - These are back ordered so I ordered two of the CIC video cables and shaved part of the connector to make it work. Will report back if any issues doing this Update 8-6-13: THIS DID NOT WORK!!- Update 8-13-13: I WAS WRONG. IT WORKED JUST FINE.$38.50 (correct version is cheaper but back ordered until mid-August. Update 8-6-13: ECS Tuning has these in stock now. I'm going to send back one of the video cables (the one I didn't modify obviously) and have already ordered the correct cable. It will be here Thursday.. Until then I'm stuck with European maps, lol.
-Trim piece around iDrive controller (comes from the 6 series model) - Included (51169169999)
-Trim piece that goes around the CIC slot - Included (51456976361 for black, must have lower piece from CCC, existing piece is fine if available)

-Optional: LCI climate control assembly (buttons are slightly larger to better fit the CIC trim) - did not purchase this, but I found one for $129 I'm thinking about buying

Aftermarket Parts:
-CAN emulator to activate navigation, etc. without paying BMW big bucks for their activation codes (find on eBay) - $100
-Updated 2013 maps (find online, put them on a 32GB USB drive) - Free
-FSC code for updating maps (find on internet for < $50) - $49 Update 8-6-13: Received my FSC code, but you can't put it in until the system detects a USB drive with the map update on it.. and my USB port doesn't work yet due to trying to make a video cable work, SO, I can only hope this code is valid (SEE UPDATE). UPDATE: THE CABLE WASN'T THE PROBLEM. THE ISSUE IS THE SOFTWARE ON MY CIC IS TOO OLD TO UTILIZE USB TO UPDATE THE MAPS. I HAVE TO USE 2012 DVD'S FOR NOW
-"FAKRA" GPS antenna. (ebay, $15 or less if you're willing to wait on a shipment from China) - $15 (can be had for $5 if you're patient). Update 8/20/13: Not needed if you have CCC prep or CCC. See later posts about the connector in the trunk, TCU, etc.
-Misc stuff from Radio Shack (I bought way too much stuff) - $30

I'll post some pictures as I get into actually doing the retrofit. Hopefully today I will have most of my parts and by Saturday have everything I need to get it installed. I'll post a lot of pictures and everything I do coding wise when trying to get it to work.

Total thus far: $1,297.99 (if my math is right)

I have been reading this thread for quite sometime now. I recently bought a 2009 E61 with all the options available for that year except for Active Cruise Control and Night Vision.

Options that are applicable here are
PDC, Logic7 HiFi, USB/AUX input with iPod/USB adaptor, HD Radio & SIRIUS, BMW Navigation with Voice Command/Real-time traffic.

Could someone suggest me on what I need to get to do this CIC retrofit. The CCC looks very outdated so does the DVD based navi.

thanks in advance

I see there's still some action in this thread so I might as well post here to see if there's any interest.

I bought all of the actual CIC retrofit gear that schpenxel (OP) used in this tutorial after he got rid of his 5-series. With the help of this thread I was up and running pretty quickly in my '07 550i. Now, a few years later, I'm getting rid of my car too. I have everything from this tutorial thread for sale (CIC, CID, Combox, iDrive Knob, USB Port, A/V Port, Wires, etc.). Again, to be clear, I have the actual exact hardware pictured all throughout this thread that I bought from the original poster when he sold it. The only piece I no longer have is the emulator, which can be found online for ~$40.

I'll have them up on eBay soon but I'd much rather sell to one of you good like-minded folks from Bimmerfest. If you're interested, PM me and we can discuss details.

Can anyone help me....

My wiring on the car is as follows (car had TCU only before):

1 yellow
3 blue
15 red/black
17 red / yellow
19 black
21 clear
31 light grey
33 yellow
36 brown
37 yellow / white
38 white / blue
46 green
50 blue / grey

Seems to be different to everyone elses?

I have power there as the optical comes on when plugged in, but Tool32 says cant find the combox.

I've successfully retrofitted/coded CIC in my '08 X5, so I'll offer my $.02.
I don't believe the CIC has to come from an M5. It may not even have to come from a 5 series. When you code the new CIC you will have to change the build date in the VO. NCSExpert will code the CIC with the display features an M5 with that build date would have. These features may or may not be different from what you currently have with the CCC.

Hi guys,

I have sucessefully retrofited CIC on my BMW 535d from 2004. Everything works fine except a warning messages related with microfilter service that appears everytime I start the car. In CIC, under car status, I have 2 messages without any text. One is the DPF and the other one is about microfilter. Anyone knows how to disable this message ??? I have searched and saw something related with services on KOMBI module.

Thanks.

Have a quick question, does the multimedia options list (for example Logic 7, HD/SAT tuner, Professional navigation) from the donor vehicle must match with yours to do this retrofit from CCC to CIC or those options can be coded in at the time of installation? Also what is the proper version of CIC that allows BMW online and BMW apps without buying the license?

thanks

For anyone that has done a retrofit--is there any reason to keep the CCC? i am thinking of selling it, but I had heard I may need it to have the car programmed. In reality, this car is a bit old, what programming would it need? If i get a new transmission or something, would the lack of a CCC prevent it from being worked on?

I cannot find those old threads....

Don't worry about it. When they say that they mean like if your configuration string remains with CCC and it would plug into the dealer computer it may try to program CCC and not find it and fail but that's all non relevant. First you can edit that and put in the SA code for CIC and never have to worry about this again. WinKFP yourself is the other option.

need to update VO for this retrofit

I just tried retrofitting CIC in my 09'E61 (fully loaded) that came with $6VB option (CCC with updated iDrive controller) and many more (see list of options for both vechicles attached). I also have an emulator to activate navigation and voice control. THe donor CIC is from a 2010 E60 535xi. I just followed CIC retrofit guide and updated VO in CAS and LMA with #0909 and $6VA and checked them again and are udpated.

Image

At first, the cic started up and my navigation is locked to the donor vechicle's locaiton in east coast, probably this might be fixed by driving the car around. Then there is no audio and I dont have my logic 7 settings anymore in settings (because the donor one has only HiFi speaker system 676 vs my HiFi system professional DSP 677), voice control doesnt work (nothing happens when I press voice button on the steering), passenger climate control doesnt work.

I am probably missing more features that I havent checked/tested for. For now I swtiched back to original setup. Before I retry again, could someone give me the proper VO update string that I have to do to get this functioning properly.

thanks in advance for your time.

Did you make the changes needed for your special requirements (not the simple case) in the VO and save them.. Its been a while since I did this but i had a couple changes in VO that related to the sound and then had to run through module reset in the same order they appear in the system....not sure this is much help but its a shot...good luck
I learned I had to reset a couple times...saving each backup....and the order was important. Also, you have to allow the car to shutdown completely...power off for at least 10 min.

thanks for your reply. Could you elaborate on this as your memory permits?

and about this as well?? by reset you mean resetting CIC by pressing the volume knob ?25sec?

thanks

#458 ·
No, it means to reset using INPA...just have it run through each program in each of the modules - I think there are 4 or 5 of them as I recall. I think the reset you are referring to is really a restart or boot. What I am referring to is actual run through on the coding. It realigns these these like KOMBI and others to ensure they are coded to work together...kind of resync. This is the finishing of your coding....along with the 10 plus min to allow the system to shutdown and put things in a safe configuration.

i just finished my CIC upgrade in the e61. everything is working fine. i need to do a quick coding thing to get Night Vision working again. i have swapped the wires, but forgot to change the code for it.

the only thing that is odd, is that the steering wheel buttons on the right side do not seem to work as i think they should. i know that on CIC machines the top button(diamond icon) is to switch between sources, this is not occurring. it really seems to be doing nothing. is there another module i need to code? also the track forward/track backwards buttons are backwards. to go to the next song i have to click the down arrow, to start a song again i click the up arrow. the opposite of what it was with the CCC. the lane departure button is working as it should, so not all of the buttons on the ride of the steering wheel are misbehaving.

i also upgraded the drive in the CIC to a 256GB SSD,

is there a list of modules that i should also update after this upgrade?

Thank You,

G~

I believe that button is programmable, so maybe it's not programmed to do anything. You should be able to set what that button does through the menu.
