Update 8/20/2013: I tried to go through and add part numbers to everything. These are done to the best of my ability, but please do your own research to be sure!!

So, I decided I was going to do a CCC retrofit, but the further I got into researching parts, the more I realized I might as well just do a CIC retrofit for about the same price. I've seen threads on this, but none that really made it as cut and dry as it probably should be, so hopefully this thread helps.

All my parts are starting to come in, so here my thread on it:

Here's what you need (will be updated as I go):

BMW made parts:
-CIC unit - $1000 on eBay, (65129199616 I think) included other parts noted below (actually I bought it outside of eBay to get the price lower, but that's not really the best idea usually)
-Display ("CID") - Included (65829224346)
-iDrive controller (optional) - Included (65829240957)
-Connector to hook up new iDrive controller - Included (Tyco/TE 968813) - available at http://www.onlinecomponents.com/te-connectivity-amp-brand-9688131.html?p=43816490 Edit 9/15: I believe BMW part number 61138380696 is the same and will work as well
-CID CAN/power connector (61136954526) - Included
-CIC cable, connects to CID for video signal (61119185171) - $38.50
-USB Port (61319167196) - $26.99
-USB Port cable (61129196805) - These are back ordered so I ordered two of the CIC video cables and shaved part of the connector to make it work. Will report back if any issues doing this Update 8-6-13: THIS DID NOT WORK!!- Update 8-13-13: I WAS WRONG. IT WORKED JUST FINE.$38.50 (correct version is cheaper but back ordered until mid-August. Update 8-6-13: ECS Tuning has these in stock now. I'm going to send back one of the video cables (the one I didn't modify obviously) and have already ordered the correct cable. It will be here Thursday.. Until then I'm stuck with European maps, lol.
-Trim piece around iDrive controller (comes from the 6 series model) - Included (51169169999)
-Trim piece that goes around the CIC slot - Included (51456976361 for black, must have lower piece from CCC, existing piece is fine if available)

-Optional: LCI climate control assembly (buttons are slightly larger to better fit the CIC trim) - did not purchase this, but I found one for $129 I'm thinking about buying

Aftermarket Parts:
-CAN emulator to activate navigation, etc. without paying BMW big bucks for their activation codes (find on eBay) - $100
-Updated 2013 maps (find online, put them on a 32GB USB drive) - Free
-FSC code for updating maps (find on internet for < $50) - $49 Update 8-6-13: Received my FSC code, but you can't put it in until the system detects a USB drive with the map update on it.. and my USB port doesn't work yet due to trying to make a video cable work, SO, I can only hope this code is valid (SEE UPDATE). UPDATE: THE CABLE WASN'T THE PROBLEM. THE ISSUE IS THE SOFTWARE ON MY CIC IS TOO OLD TO UTILIZE USB TO UPDATE THE MAPS. I HAVE TO USE 2012 DVD'S FOR NOW
-"FAKRA" GPS antenna. (ebay, $15 or less if you're willing to wait on a shipment from China) - $15 (can be had for $5 if you're patient). Update 8/20/13: Not needed if you have CCC prep or CCC. See later posts about the connector in the trunk, TCU, etc.
-Misc stuff from Radio Shack (I bought way too much stuff) - $30

I'll post some pictures as I get into actually doing the retrofit. Hopefully today I will have most of my parts and by Saturday have everything I need to get it installed. I'll post a lot of pictures and everything I do coding wise when trying to get it to work.

Total thus far: $1,297.99 (if my math is right)

Try checking the box--When I tried to force the IBOC tuner options to aktiv on mine, that HD check box showed up too, but it never would work

Did you have Sirus or sirius retrofit before the CIC?

#183 · (Edited)
BAM, combox, telematics, $145!

Sold as not working (seller had no way to test it but came out of working vehicle). Can't beat that, IF it works, lol. We shall see soon enough

I just hope the software on it isn't too new as they started putting a stop to a lot of the "fun" stuff in the later versions

----------------

Also, on the Sirius radio front, I got it working, EXCEPT I can't get over channel 26 for some reason. It just skips from 26 to 183, then has like 100+ channels for 183, but I can't go to any of them

Any ideas on this one? I am thinking I may have to update the Sirius module to newer software but I'm guessing at this point

For anyone else adding Sirius to their BMW--I literally just stuck the Sirius antenna under the dash (as far towards the front of the car as I could get it--pulled CID screen to get access) and it has worked just fine, even when driving on roads with thick trees to the south. I imagine this would be even better for ones without the center speaker up there

Update: Got the Sirius issue fixed! I ended up using Winkfp (for the first time ever by the way) to flash to the latest software I had (V49) and all the channels showed right up. Awesome! Not sure if it was something wrong with what was on there, or it was just too old and for some reason needed to be updated to take into account the XM/Sirius merger or something like that

Winkfp wasn't QUITE as scary as I thought it'd be to use, however, given how small the files for the Sirius update were vs. most other modules, anyone who updates any important computers without a power supply is absolutely insane. Even just the Sirius module took a good 5 minutes to update and I was worried the whole time I was going to bump the USB cable or something on accident and disconnect it / brick the Sirius module

Anyways. One more thing down. Combox will be here Friday. Now if my connectors would just get here so I can finish my plug and play harness.

Can't wait for updates on the combox. I was under impression that it was the software inside the CIC that disabled free 6nr without fsc voice not the combox.

What I also wonder is where all these retrofit shops get their hardware. I can't find anything on eBay for a decent price and yet they have stock.

Also, my connectors for the plug and play combox harness will be here Wednesday, finally. I am going to build three harnesses, in case anyone wants one.

CIC in and Working!

It took awhile to get another CIC, but this one came from getOEMParts (Tischer BMW) as an exchange unit - p/n ending in 9616. Having returned my first CIC already I will not be able to return a core but whatever...

I also got my dark birch trim plate as well as my Pasternack cables - three boxes within an hour... A fun Friday! It was easy with the right parts... Swap out the old stuff per this DIY, move wires over, etc... Put the pre-LCI climate controller into the new LCI trim - small gap around buttons is fine by me... Plug the connectors into the back of CIC and CID. Note well that there is no FM antenna (black FAKRA) lead, so expect to hear just hiss... Note also that my unit has logos on the back for HD Radio along with SiriusXM - but only the single blue FAKRA GPS lead... As I have both of those as external devices already, I will run my new black FAKRA from the rear to the dash for the radio.

So, I energized the system and - yes! I see a warning message on my screen but off center, not aligned. At least all the stuff is talking...except the new iDrive controller still is inop. No worries as I then updated the VO...

Being now in my 20 minute wait after powering the car down - after completing changes to VO: new build date is #0909, added $6VA, FA_wrote to CAS and LMA, then default coded CIC. Still had the funky screen, so I default coded the CID - bam - solid menu screen, so sharp and clear. Next was the TCU - default code. Seeing my new iDrive controller not working, default coded ZBE2 and shut 'er down.

When I power up I hope to see more goodness. If not, what's next to do to tidy this up and get my iDrive working with the new CIC?

Trying it w old controller...

So, my first day working with the new gear...

I was able to easily (re)make up an end for a FAKRA RG-174 coax cable (parts from Pasternack - real pros, quick service, solid packaging) and access my diversity antenna amp in the left rear sail panel. I unplugged the existing black FAKRA Jack, plugged in my new cable, and snaked it down the left side behind the trim, into center console, then on up to the dash, Once I plugged it into the back of the CIC, hiss became good music. For any who read this who share my OEM lack of an FM antenna lead behind the dash, the terms "jack" and "plug" in FAKRA-speak (these would be Type A - black plastic pieces...) are a bit confusing. What you need here is a "jack" at each end of your cable - a female receiving piece at each end to snap over the male piece protruding from the back of the head unit (CCC or CIC - both have an antenna lead), and the same style of male connector protruding from the diversity antenna amplifier. This is quite easy to do as there as there is only 1 FAKRA connector on that little box. I had my cables made up for 5m (longest that BMW used to stock), but for this particular application, 4m or maybe even 3m would have worked. No worries, excess cable is coiled up neatly and is out of sight. The price (these were ~$35 and I have an extra one in blue - if interested...) does not change much for adding cable length, so I erred on going long. Of course, once I realized that I would need to cut one end to put on the second "female" piece, I cut enough to make up a "gender changing" cable should I need such in the future. Just order yours with two female ends to avoid this fun... Yes, I also have a small collection of bare plugs and jacks for later projects, spare, whatever - they were cheap enough...

Despite trying several coding combos, things seem to work best when I just replace the actual #0906 in the VO with our "constructive" build date of #0909 to the VO and leave out the $6VA. With that in, my Satellite Radio disappeared as a listening choice, even though I confirmed that after the FA Write and default coding, the car (CIC) was indeed default coded "SDARS_in..." to "Exbox" as it should have. For my car, $609 was already there.

Trying now to use old controller w the new CIC but the ZBE2 module is not responding to my efforts. COAPI 2041 errors, etc... Seems to indicate a need for new datens, yet Chris sent me the v49 datens not long ago and the whole car reflects updates as of July 2013, save just a few modules which stayed at the 2006 levels. My old controller (with two buttons under the dial) works to a point, but when scrolling the dial goes to the very top or very bottom of a menu screen without the possibility of choosing intermediate selections on the screen. Plus, I get a warning triangle that my right rear tail light is malfunctioning, then a minute later, same for the left. This all seems to point to a need to ensure that the latest datens are in the software. I will also utilize the before and after UIF text files I saved to see about a need to flash the controller?

Here was yesterday afternoon's module info after the install and coding for #0909 along with adding $6VA...

I added the bold to show the 2013 dates... Seems that when I ran this the other day with the CCC in place I had mostly 2013 dates for software - from the trip to dealer for s/w update.

Despite having an emulator in place, nav is grayed out and voice command is inop. Maybe I should remove the emulator while I troubleshoot the iDrive controller? Of course, seeing as this exchange CIC came from a BMW dealer, perhaps they are reflashed in the refurb process, and any saved FSC's (for nav, voice, etc...) are lost? That would explain emulator in and still a gray nav choice...

What tools did you need to make that cable?

I have a feeling you are right on the saved FSC's.. which is not so good

#194 ·
So you have good sources for unlocking things for me - FSC and maps? How do I tell if it has maps or anything else on the hard drive? I have the 2013.2 nav DVD's from dealer that worked w the CCC.... Use same ones to update it?

#197 ·
I have a good source for FSC codes for map updates only--I don't think there IS a source for FSC codes for activating nav or voice other than BMW (if there were there wouldn't be a need for the emulator..)

The DVD's you have won't work on the CIC system, but they can be downloaded easy enough off most torrent sites.

On the FSC codes to activate nav/voice--AFAIK there is no way to do it other than to buy the code from BMW if it has no code on it at all right now. Is returning that unit and buying a used one an option? There may be a way to do it that is hush hush that involves manually installing the FSC code from another car, then letting the emulator make it work. I have absolutely no idea how to do it though, and have only read hints about it on other forums

Pics from today below. I was bored and decided to take a look at the TCU and compare the connections to the combox. My last connector for the tcu/combox retrofit wiring harness will be here on Wednesday--I almost just went forward without it, but then decided to just wait

#238 · (Edited)
I have been digging into this as well. I want to replace my TCU with a combox (not in trunk but behind the rear seat on a 650i), and I want do the 6FL into the console at the same time. My car has just the single aux-in jack as OEM. I understand that those who do the full-on 6NF baseplate with phone cradle in the console also route another USB (and aux-in?) cable to a connector on the combox. Not sure that I need the cradle and the phone-specific snap-in piece as I like having the storage area, but I would like to be able to get all the 6NR (ConnectedDrive) and 6NF audio/video goodness - and the signal booster for the cell antenna - by plugging a cable into my phone which rests inside the console storage area. Is this possible or must I source the cradle etc. to do this?

Plus, 6NF does not work w iPhone 5? I plan to have a 5 or a 5S soon... (5C is a colored-up repackaged 5 so I read).

wow so much progress while I was gone. I am very impress. @ schpenxel I still have the files on my work station in the garage but honest truth I have been so busy lately. I don't remember the last time I went in there.
I will be taking my car combox apart and takes pictures and video over the weekend possibly tomorrow with the new iPhone 5s because a lot of people are contacting me regarding the combox. stay tune. @dcjwardog I'm happy to hear that you have a working CIC!!!
