Update 8/20/2013: I tried to go through and add part numbers to everything. These are done to the best of my ability, but please do your own research to be sure!!

So, I decided I was going to do a CCC retrofit, but the further I got into researching parts, the more I realized I might as well just do a CIC retrofit for about the same price. I've seen threads on this, but none that really made it as cut and dry as it probably should be, so hopefully this thread helps.

All my parts are starting to come in, so here my thread on it:

Here's what you need (will be updated as I go):

BMW made parts:
-CIC unit - $1000 on eBay, (65129199616 I think) included other parts noted below (actually I bought it outside of eBay to get the price lower, but that's not really the best idea usually)
-Display ("CID") - Included (65829224346)
-iDrive controller (optional) - Included (65829240957)
-Connector to hook up new iDrive controller - Included (Tyco/TE 968813) - available at http://www.onlinecomponents.com/te-connectivity-amp-brand-9688131.html?p=43816490 Edit 9/15: I believe BMW part number 61138380696 is the same and will work as well
-CID CAN/power connector (61136954526) - Included
-CIC cable, connects to CID for video signal (61119185171) - $38.50
-USB Port (61319167196) - $26.99
-USB Port cable (61129196805) - These are back ordered so I ordered two of the CIC video cables and shaved part of the connector to make it work. Will report back if any issues doing this Update 8-6-13: THIS DID NOT WORK!!- Update 8-13-13: I WAS WRONG. IT WORKED JUST FINE.$38.50 (correct version is cheaper but back ordered until mid-August. Update 8-6-13: ECS Tuning has these in stock now. I'm going to send back one of the video cables (the one I didn't modify obviously) and have already ordered the correct cable. It will be here Thursday.. Until then I'm stuck with European maps, lol.
-Trim piece around iDrive controller (comes from the 6 series model) - Included (51169169999)
-Trim piece that goes around the CIC slot - Included (51456976361 for black, must have lower piece from CCC, existing piece is fine if available)

-Optional: LCI climate control assembly (buttons are slightly larger to better fit the CIC trim) - did not purchase this, but I found one for $129 I'm thinking about buying

Aftermarket Parts:
-CAN emulator to activate navigation, etc. without paying BMW big bucks for their activation codes (find on eBay) - $100
-Updated 2013 maps (find online, put them on a 32GB USB drive) - Free
-FSC code for updating maps (find on internet for < $50) - $49 Update 8-6-13: Received my FSC code, but you can't put it in until the system detects a USB drive with the map update on it.. and my USB port doesn't work yet due to trying to make a video cable work, SO, I can only hope this code is valid (SEE UPDATE). UPDATE: THE CABLE WASN'T THE PROBLEM. THE ISSUE IS THE SOFTWARE ON MY CIC IS TOO OLD TO UTILIZE USB TO UPDATE THE MAPS. I HAVE TO USE 2012 DVD'S FOR NOW
-"FAKRA" GPS antenna. (ebay, $15 or less if you're willing to wait on a shipment from China) - $15 (can be had for $5 if you're patient). Update 8/20/13: Not needed if you have CCC prep or CCC. See later posts about the connector in the trunk, TCU, etc.
-Misc stuff from Radio Shack (I bought way too much stuff) - $30

I'll post some pictures as I get into actually doing the retrofit. Hopefully today I will have most of my parts and by Saturday have everything I need to get it installed. I'll post a lot of pictures and everything I do coding wise when trying to get it to work.

Total thus far: $1,297.99 (if my math is right)

I need the harness for both tcu and mulf. So I've ordered the kufatwc connectors. Already received the pins and will be wiring them tomorrow.

However, i have a bigger dilemma. My Night Vision is not working with the CIC. I enabled the NIVI options using the .TRC file and when I press the NIVI button it says turning on bmw night vision and then the night vision screen comes up but no video. I get the options for contrast brightness etc but no actual video. I really need to fix this as its one of my most used options in winter night driving to avoid deers etc.

djcwardog would be the best person to help with that as his has NV as well

The cic has a few video inputs. My guess is it's using the wrong one. I'd have to look at the trc file to try to find where that is selected

NiVi?

Well, I had checked mine out in the garage after all the ComBox coding. While it truly worked fine after the CIC and before Combox, now it is the same - all indicia of normal function but no actual image in there.

I wonder what is different from your CIC coding today and what mine was before Combox and 6NF cradle(less) retrofit? Didn't we just use NCS to default code the CIC module after editing our VO to make our build date later? Now I will have to see if I needed to make any specific edits after that to get NiVi to work...

Btw, I still need to update my CIC to v41 for all three modules: 63, 62 and A0. Maybe in the new year...

Synthesis of info to date

Ok, in the "I am a non observant dumbass" category, I believe that I judged "properly working" to mean that I restored the screen take-over by the NiVi when I pressed the dash button. I probably have actually had just a black screen with no video input ever since I took out my CCC...

No worries though as I think we have enough info from the various forums to put a plan together.

Recall that I noted only pins 2 and 4 were occupied when I pulled out the white B connector from my Main quad harness.

Now, read this extract from one of those two posts you linked us to just above. BTW, I was glad to see that my earlier search (when you flagged this issue for me) returning the first, that links to the second, was validated. I didn't want to post results until I had them, but....

I think my problem is the video input to the cic.

Has it changed or is it the same the ccc had? I remember that I red somewhere that the block connector has a slightly different pinout.
it should be like that: (not tested yet)

Connector X13814 CCC:
pin2 white wire
pin4 yellow wire
pin11 shield

Connector X13814 CIC:
pin12 white wire
pin2 yellow wire
pin11 shield

So people who swap their ccc with a cic and also have TV-Module (DJC: or who have just the NIVI module), have to re-wire connector X13814 in order to see any picture.
When the picture is provided by an fbas signal.
X13814 is on the opposite corner from the opps connector.
-----------------------------

For me, I will try moving my existing pin 2 wire, after confirming the color to be white, over to pin 12. I will then move the wire (hope it is indeed yellow for me...) from pin 4 over to the pin 2 location now vacant. Because I have a nav/voice command emulator that included a full PnP harness with every pin having a wire, I will just confirm and move the two relevant wires in the PnP harness to obtain FBAS 1 at pins 2, 11, and 12.

I hope that this will make our black screens come to life. Our US spec cars don't offer TV, so I bet that our video from NIVI module goes direct into the quad harness, B. The logic of this seems to track with our known pin-outs for FBAS 1, 2, and 3. Check my photos in Schpenxel's related Combox DIY thread where I lay those out on paper with parts on my kitchen table and then shoot a photo of it... The irony of this is that we had the answer just with my photo and pin outs, which came from the earlier work of people much more clever than I. I probably just needed to make the wiring change then and it would have been fine. More to follow!

Here is that shot again:

Nice find!

Looks like, for a German car anyway, it is FBAS 1 for the TV, FBAS 2 for the DVD (changer?), and FBAS 3 for "Apple".

So, I would have FBAS 1 for NiVi and FBAS 3 for my cradle-less 6NF, not FBAS 2. However, I just saw the PDF on 6NF which indicates, next available, so FBAS 1 for NiVi and FBAS 2 for Apple IPOD video.

Strange that neither of us had a shield connection at pin 11. Perhaps the NiVi is not a shielded cable run like the others? It is a direct run from the NiVi module under the dash to the CIC, less than three feet, perhaps?

My car is a 2007 E63, came w CCC and night vision among other options.

I can confirm that switching the 2 pins made the NIVI light right up!

SO to all(or the few) of you who have NIVI and have retrofitted CIC, you will have to change the pins on the white connector as djcwardog described above.

I am also thankful to djcwardog and the OP who have been contributing immensley to this community and enabling and encouraging us novices to start taking the risks and enjoying the rewards that come with retrofits!!

Next up is the combox retrofit and making the NIVI full screen :)

Me too!

I moved my clear (not white) wire out of pin 2 into vacant pin 12 in the car's harness. I then moved the wire (which was not yellow) out of pin 4 and into now-vacant pin 2. I did nothing about the missing shield wire and vacant pin 11.

After editing, I loaded the 23rd revision of my CIC.man file using NCS in Manipulate mode. Even though we have no TV, I saw that TV was set for Wert_21, TVC set to Wert_255 and that TVM was set for Kein TVM. I edited my NVC line to Wert_21. So, with TV and NiVi set to the same value, I tried it out, and...

Success! I have a video feed on my CID when I press the dash button for Night Vision and the adjustment settings show changes in brightness, etc.

Thanks for flagging this as an issue and glad that I could participate in solving this. We need to be sure that these steps are rolled into the body of knowledge for DIY retrofits.

Now to use my ICOM or get help in bringing my CIC up to v41...

Why wait? With your combox in, even if your CIC is below v41 (like mine), you will enjoy bluetooth music streaming and album art displayed when you plug in your I-whatever. Vortex's E90.SSD is a great start. I am glad to share my version, think I have already in earlier posts.. My merged CIC file is getting close, but I need to see what CIC.16 will add as far as lines to code....such as the all-important BMW Apps.

I can't wait to get my engine back in so I can go back to working on the combox fun.

I think I posted earlier, but I picked up two USB cables and the FBAS cable a few weeks back on eBay, so I have a lot of what I'll need. Still need to get the ports, etc. to make the whole video input thing work

Good info on the night vision fix! I am planning on tackling a HUD retrofit after everything else is going... Why I keep torturing myself I'll never know, lol. Not sure I have seen a CIC retrofit + HUD retrofit in one car yet, so that should be tons of fun. I really miss having HUD though

Treat as a Combox Media

My combox is also a telematics version. Because BMW is unlikely to grant you access to the Assist network with a spoofed CIC and combox, many of us just ignore the two telematics antenna cables that are now in your TCU. Without BMW's permission to enter, you will lose your telematics stuff anyway. Then we just code out the telematics stuff to avoid SOS errors, etc. in sum, just install it as if it were a combox media and code to suit...

Not sure on that one.. just checked in NCS Dummy and options are:

area_code_1
area_code_2
area_code_3
area_code_4
area_code_5
area_code_6
alle_anderen

so I would think what you are doing would work. Maybe there is something else that has to match up to the area you are trying to change it to?

Going to throw in an LCI climate control module this weekend.. managed to snag one for $65 in great shape. Came with the CCC bezel too but I obviously don't need that

Went to install the new climate control stuff tonight and noticed the AC light was flashing when I started the car + the radiator fan was running wide open

So, I found a thread on another forum that explained the new/old had one wire that was different. Wire for pin 21 you have to cut and one side goes to power and the other goes to ground. I did that, but still have the same problem. Next going to try to update the software on the climate control unit to see if that helps

Any other ideas??

So, I re-did the wiring today and soldered everything properly, then did a default coding on the climate controls. Started it up and the engine fan wasn't roaring, so that was a good sign. AC light was still blinking. Let it sit and idle for a while and it finally stopped. Checked INPA and the AC compressor does indeed show being turned on/off via the AC button (imagine that)

Looks like it's done. I put everything back together and played with it a little, everything seems to work properly. Pretty cool having passenger vent controls separate now (can change which vents are on/off specifically just for the passenger). Also makes for an easy way to get to the climate control screen to adjust the vent temperatures as opposed to having to click through 3 or 4 screens every time

Ran all the wires this afternoon for a video in, like dj posted about earlier. I'm going to make a real wiring diagram at some point. dj's is by far the best there is, and it helped a lot, but that's still pretty rough hand drawn chicken scratch almost, lol

I'm still missing the component in adapter but everything else is in place. I should be able to just plug that in once I get it

Couple of weird things I found--I found several wires already running from the CIC qualock "B" connector to a connector right at the rear of the center console. It was blocked off and didn't have anything hooked to it, but if I had known, I might could have just used those wires. No clue what they usually for though?

The bluetooth antenna was also wired weird. It seemed like it split off or something? Not sure what was going on there, but it works so I'm fine with it

Hi guys!

I have been following this thread with great interest (good work schpenxel!) and looking to upgrade my CCC to CIC. I found a kit on ebay for my E61 2007 LCI.

This is the description...

" Set will include:
1) CIC headunit for E6x cars. (CIC)
2) CIC monitor for E6x cars. (CID)
3) Video wire CIC to CID.
4) USB slot (USB)
5) Connection wire USB to CIC
6) Navigation activation
7) iDrive controller
8) Installed 2014 maps for your region

For additional 150GBP we can precode cic unit to your car vin number so everything will be plug and play. Navigation activation is without hardware!! "
Now, I am getting really confused by the VIN, activation stuff.

The guy selling the quipment has said Voice activation not possible, it can be done with emualator. This is what really throws me!

Dear caudime (me),

hi, yes voice control activation not possible. it can be done with emulator emulator price is 100gbp
My understanding of an emualtor, is that the VIN inside the CIC unit would not be the same as my car, so you use an emulator to trick the CIC in believing both VINs marry(?)

The guy selling the kit said for an extra ÂŁ150, he would precode the CIC to my VIN, so how would an emualtor (for which he quoted an additional ÂŁ100 for voice) be of any good??

As you can probably see, I'm getting confused perhaps.
Any advise would be grand.

Just to add - My existing setup is TCU with BMW assist (never used) and bluetooth, Navi professional CCC.

Thanks!

I've only read one case of someone ordering a CIC "pre coded" on ebay, and the results weren't so good.. If you know how to work with NCS Expert yourself, I'd just get the emulator and skip the coding. That's just what I would do though.
