ZF 6HP26 torque converter lock up smoothness?

So--since before I had to do the whole engine rebuild thing, I've noticed that I can always feel when the torque converter locks. This is at 25mph under normal acceleration when the transmission is warm. I almost replaced the torque converter while I had the engine out, but the sheer number of unknowns at that point made me not want to spend the money ($500 from ZF)

Last night I was reading something from ZF about these transmissions (isn't that what everyone does with their time off? lol) and it said they have a gradual torque converter clutch lock up to make it smoother. Mine certainly isn't smooth. I don't think it's worse than a normal cars, but it's certainly not any better

So, I am curious. Can everyone else feel when their torque converters lock at 25mph? It feels like another gear change almost. If you put it in manual mode and shift up to third and then accelerate from say 20 to 30mph, on mine I can feel it at 25mph.

Normal or no?

Mine gradually locks up and it seems to do it at the wrong time. When I'm accelerating, the TC starts dragging down the RPM climb noticeably (especially evident through the exhaust tone) to the point of aggravation. It doesn't lock in sorta like a gear change like the way you're describing..more like a CVT tranny bogging down the RPM. One of the many reasons why I think this tranny sucks...

gotcha--yeah that seems to be more like what ZF had described (although their description was certainly in a more positive light)

I'd just venture a guess that something is worn in the valve body causing mine to lock more abruptly, or perhaps it is a software issue. Who knows

Regardless, not a huge deal, just thought it was worth trying to figure out

I just had a brand new trans done in mine, and it's quite noticable in 3rd gear. Brand new valve body, all new steel's and converter. I'm having a surging issue though on the decel, let off the pedal on a coast and the rpms vary in 2nd and 3rd so i'm under the impression the new converter may have an issue.

Does it do it or start doing it around 25mph?

How about this one....after stopping at a red light, if I ease off of the brake and let it creep forward, the whole car will sorta shake as the car moves...almost as if the ground beneath it is shaking. I know it has to be the torque converter engaging and disengaging rapidly and it only happens with the A/C off. you guys have that? I also have shift flare during the 2-3 shift...
Strange. No, mine doesn't do that. Does it still do it in manual mode if you shift to 2 or 3 while sitting still?

Might could bump your idle RPM up a little bit to help with it. Sounds like it's not idling very well to me and trying to bump the RPM up a little bit to keep it running and that's making the car move.. then it tries to drop back down and you stop, rinse/repeat

Mine does not seem to be speed related as much as it does RPM related, if when "freewheeling" my rpms drop to 1800 it will surge back and fourth to about 1000 rpm a couple times then re-lock up and be fine. I can actually feel the car rocking as the rpm's vary. Once again speed doesn't seem to be as much a factor as rpm range. It does not seem to be engine related as my rpm's don't surge, car doesn't shake, don't have any misfires at any other times. Did not do this before the transmission re-build. I had the transmission rebuilt due to the common transmission faults in the 4-5 gear change under high torque demands or shifts under higher loads.

In 3rd gear I can see the gradual TC lockup, It's not really noticeable in the "feels like an additional shift" but I can see the rpms jump in the gear change then drop a couple hundred rpms as the converter locks smoothly.

Gotcha, yeah, that sounds like how it's supposed to work for the lock up. I am planning to update the software on the transmission computer this weekend to see if it makes any difference. What it has on there now is oldddd

thank you for information, I will start with this. I hope this is a short update because I dont have a battery charger! Have you sold your car with overhauled engine, with this giant topic on this forum?

Yep, I sold it with the rebuilt engine. I hope it lasts the new owner a long time. I had been wanting something else since before the issue that started the rebuild.. and I got lucky and it sold in less than 48 hours. The new owner loves it so far.

It shouldn't be too large of an update but I'd still want to put some kind of power supply to make sure voltage does not drop.

I have something similar. When stopping at a light on an (upward) hill, I get a shuddering like you describe when I apply the brakes. I thought it was either the lockup disengaging or the "hill holder" engaging???????:dunno:
